Holy Poop....Pic's added Pg 4....update pg7

could she have been eggbound? Just a thought. Sorry about losing her that's deffinatly not a happy thing.

As for $25 per pair if im not mistaken that's what I paid for my first ever pair of just normal wild button quails. And for the 5 eggs I bought from that same breeder the same day, If im not mistaken I had to pay an extra $10 for those 5 eggs, 2 per egg ouchie..ANNND only one hatched lol! BUT the bird that hatched was a hen, and she's my favorite bird "Pippin" a wild pied.

I need to change my prices of my button quail on my site. At the time I was first into button quails I was pricing them per color. However, now since I'm not breeding for specific colors in my button quails (just letting them breed to who they want to now), prices are going to be universal....probably $15 per pair. Atleast cheaper than my most local competition ha ha. Not that we're much competition, I only have 4 buttons, but plan to get more hatching eggs in the spring.

Petstore button prices are rediculous, now, I don't mind high prices from breeders who seriosuly selectively breed and KNOW what colors of quails they're selling, but ones who let htem breed with whomever and have no idea what color the resulting eggs will be, it's rediculous IMO to charge an arm and a leggy.

I do not believe she was eggbound. She has been laying everyday, and she laid yesterday. As far as her age, she was maybe 6 months, maybe.

I can't believe you pay $25 for a pair of button's. I can go right now and get a pair for $10 at my local pet store, and if you are lucky he will give you the eggs too.

i still cant believe that pet stores sell button quail!..i had never heard of them until i joined this site...maybe down south they sell them in the stores?..they dont sell them at all up north here ...(that i know of anyway)...and, sorry to hear about your hen..

Thanks Wendy. I was pretty shocked myself when I seen them in our pet store.
Go ahead and post some picture's.....I would love to see your buttons. You do know that the males have a bib where the females don't, right?

that's a misconception not all males do have bibs

It's best to look for bibs first and if you don't see bibs, secondly look for a dark rusty red feathering near the vent area (on the sides behind the legs), and sometimes also on the chest. Some males also have bright orange legs compaired to the hens yellow legs...HOWEVER that depends on color, as does bibs. Wild coloreds have bibs, Some silvers have bibs (others dont), some blue faces have bibs (which makes them DF like shelleys but doesnt mean male unless they have blue--- but then again some males are so dark they almost look black instead of blue--it gets frusterating lol). Whites don't have bibs (some may if they're genetically predisposed to it but not all).

If you have whites, or silvers without bibs, it's best to just paciently wait until they're full grown adults, males are smaller in the pelvic and vent area, and if you're lucky your males will crow (mine still hasn't but he's a male for sure- luckily he has a light bib that's barely noticable).
