Corn meal, it doesn't matter what kind. Kills any ant, though I am not sure about fire ants I don't see why it wouldn't kill them too. They eat it and take some back to the colony and stock pile it and then the others eat it. What happens is that it swells in the abdomen and kills them. Worked for me and is natural.
Living in florida we have ants! I found this to be a great product for the kind of ants you have. I had sears coming once a month and they couldn't get rid of them. A coworker told me of this product and I went out and bought it and they were gone in a couple days. Call your local home depot or lowes to see if they have it or maybe walmart. I can't remember where I bought mine its been a couple years but eckerds keeps popping up in my head.
Thanks gang! Personally I'm a big fan of chemicals... especially if they work!
I just want them gone. I'm doing the borax mix and will probably go get a few things like combat and terro (which has a lot of good reviews on epinions.com).
I haven't tried this yet, but the lady at the feed store told me this trick: spray some DE over them and they'll get dehydrated and die in 30 minutes. Sounds very interesting, but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. If anyone does, please share your experience.
I have to give a second nod to Amdro ! That is the best stuff i have ever used. how it works is like this...you sprinkle abt a tblsp around the nest or in the area where they are. then the workers take it back to the nest to feed the queen. it kills the entire nest FAST, with in a matter of hours. On a side note, I have noticed also that when other ant colonies send out their "raiding parties" they take the dead ones back to their nest. so it ends up working a second time as well. We got ours at ACE hardware. Our feed store has it but it was WAY over priced.
I use the borax sugar mix with water... into like a sticky syrup. Seems to have worked for me so far, and quicker than a week. But you do need to put it down more than once.
