Very good, Flash. The best bait I`ve found for not getting messy and works well is a couple whole eggs. Coons and such are used to raiding nests and will usually take an easy meal first. Eggs can be left in the trap for 3-4 weeks, if nothing is caught. Nice jub, hope you get the critter.......Pop

I like your design a lot. It's very crafty. And I think it will work very well, maybe a little tweaking and fine adjustments first. Try it on your cat if you have one. I did.

mainly if I were an animal I wouldn't approach it.

I used to think that too, but they will. It may take a few days but I recently caught a gray fox in one that I made. My trigger is completely different than yours but it works well.

That's a big ol' 19 pound cat by the way, considerably larger than a gray fox. Our grays don't get much larger than 10 or 12 pounds. I'm sure they get bigger elsewhere, but not around here.

cptbahama: Your trap looks good. It has a different devise for door.

The rat trap is very easy really and it works very well. There are a few things that could be difficult,,but not too bad. 1 is the door track,,,I use a router to make a channel that the door slides easily through. It can be done without a router but you must have pieces of wood that are just the right thickness to make a channel. And the door has to be strong but light.
2nd is the string from rat trap to the board at bottom. It has to be just the right length ,not a big deal.

I put a small cage over the rat trap on top so birds won't set it off.

I think that's a great idea and good looking trap! I just wonder what the plexiglass is mounted to and could something bust out of it and how long after the snap of the trap does the door go down could something turn around and get out before it comes down? Not criticizing just curious I am always looking for something new to mess around with and this looks like something I would like to try

I don't believe any animal can bust out of it. The door and channel is built strong. A coon will try to lift door ,,but there is nothing to get a hold of.

The door closes very fast,,its amazing really. When the rat trap goes off the door hits the ground,,almost simultaneously.

I have caught animals in the past with this type of trap. Not the exact one here though,,I just built this one. (same principal) One I built in the past, I used chicken wire. Not recommended but it might work for some animals. I caught raccoons and rabbits before without a problem,,but once I caught a groundhog. Them things are extremely strong and get ticked when in a trap. A groundhog will test any trap built and will rip through chicken wire eventually.

You have some good looking home made traps,,they look better than mine. I'm betting you spent more time building yours though,,lol. I slapped mine together in about 2 hours,,,grabbing anything that would work for lumber.

I did catch a cat in it the other day. I let it go,,,,its not what killed my duck. I have seen that cat and ducks in the yard together before.

Whatever killed ducks,,,hasn't been back. I have 3 traps set since. And really NO action on them,,or any other ducks/chickens being killed.

I'm leaving them set forever I think. Can you think of a reason why I should not??? lol Keeping bait in them could be a issue though.

I have been thinking that you don't want bait that is too smelly because it might attract predators that normally might not come to the area of my chicken coop,,,if not for the bait. Is there any truth to my thoughts???
