I'm trying to become as self sufficient as possible. That includes growing feed for chickens, rabbits and a pair of geese. I was thinking of growing sunflowers for seeds, a small plot of oats, barley, alfalfa, and Timothy hay. I also have a garden of many veggies and there will be scraps. I plan to free range about 5-10 chickens on about 3/4 or an acre surrounded by wild prairie and corn field.
A question I had was about switch grass ( panicum vergatum) I've read it has been used as hay for live stock as well as the seeds and plants being food for pheasant, ducks, geese, song birds, rabbits and other wild animals. Has anyone fed this to chickens, geese or rabbits? I have acres of it next to the house and it would be an easy winter storage feed.
