Homemade flock block recipes

I make chicken 'cake'

I call it that because of the cakey consistency.

Layer mash
whatever vegetable is left over
some meat if I have any
oats
wild bird seed
enough egg and milk to bind it together

I might drizzle it with molasses or yogurt and sprinkle with flax seeds or chia if I think my girls deserve something a 'little bit fancy'

Egg is the best binder, I use it for my seed blocks for my aviary birds and cockatiel too. 2 cups seed to one egg white. mix together and put into lined muffin pan. I stick pieces of wire in so I can hang them up later. Then bake until hard!

Store bought ones are bound with PVA glue, I don't want my birds eating glue!!!!!

Ok so I made one tonight. Here is what I did

1 cup of fresh suet fat (beef) - then I melted that....PEE YEEW it stunk

While that was melting on the stove on LOW I took a bowl and mixed:
1 cup BOSS
1 cup Pro Manna Harvest Delight (wheat, peanuts, dried raisins; tomatoes; and carrots, popcorn, sunflower seeds, safflower seed, red and white millet, soybean meal, corn, milo, oatmeal, etc)
Look this stuff up, its kinda spendy but I already had some so I used it.
I also had some millet sprays that i crunched up in there
1 cup of oyster shell that I pulverized in the magic bullet
1 cup dried cherries ( I found in the pantry that no one ever ate!)
1 cup dried apricots (see above note - lol)

Once the fat was melted, I added a cup of peanut butter and melted that all together. Pour the fat/peanut butter into the bowl with all the dry ingredients.
Pour mixture into a mold (I used my suet cage lined with reynolds non stick foil) and squish it down.

Then I put it in the fridge. Will let you all know tomorrow how it comes out. I have never done this before but its getting cold and rainy here in north Texas and there are not alot of bugs left. Also I have seen an egg production drop and I read in my Backyard Poultry magazine that this sometimes help out with that.

ALSO - I have a hen with the POX and I thought the extra protein and vitamins would help her fight it off. I was going to mix in a little poultry drench but I forgot...maybe next time. Here are a couple pics:

I love it, but you can only get them from the UK and its a little spendy. Cost $50 including the shipping.

I just baked my girls their second cake today... It's oatmeal, bird feed, sunflower seeds, pizza, corn, capitain crunch, and a few eggs. I baked it for an hour and a half on 350. I'm so glad I came across this thread because they love it!

Here's the first one I baked, they loved it!
