Homemade GUMP Bread - best I've found! **New pics added on pg. 5**

Wildsky, sorry to hear of your delimma. I was planning on making the drive up to NE to eat with you. If you were going to make "bowls" for soup, how big of a piece of dough do you use for each bowl? baseball size? then let it rise bigger? I want to do that on my next day off and I will make sure I have fresh yeast. I'm sure it has been mentioned already on this thread but there are too many pages to go thru now.

I would probably use half a loaf worth to make a soup bowl.

2nd time this week making G-bread, I have a crock of onion soup cooking and that's just an excuse to use alot of bread to scoop up every last onion

Don't know if anyone has metioned this before. I keep my yeast in the freezer and get it out before hand to warm up.

It won't get old in there. I buy bulk at Sams and learned this trick from the school when I worked in the cafeteria there.

I still need to make this bread. Think I will do it on Monday.

We are forcast for 40's to be the highs and make ww taco soup to go with it so I don't completly blow my ww.

I know my roll recipe by memory. My family loves homemade bread more than anything else.

I had the same problem.
Now I keep a small Tupperware container with about a 1/2 cup of yeast in the fridge and the rest is tightly stored in the freezer. I get the 2 pound package at Costco. Even if it goes bad before I use it up and I have to toss it and buy new, it is still cheaper than buying the little packets.

I just buy the small glass jar, this last one I found left on the counter after my MIL made something, I was really annoyed and put it back in the fridge, but I think it stayed out too long and was ruined. I might have to hide it away next week (she'll be here for DD's birthday) but I don't think she'll look for it in the freezer

Oh I do! I buy mine at Sams in a double 1 lb. packet, because we end up using a lot of yeast. It lasts forever but the date on it is usually for quite a good amount of time, so expiration dates are not an issue here most generally.
