Homemade nesting boxes?

I brought home some of those square plastic milk crates from school to use to carry garden stuff and one of my ducks decided to use one for a nesting box. If you have a school or dairy around you can get them free if they have a cracked side or something. Our dairies will give them to us if we ask.

These are what I am planning to use in my bantam coop, dunno if they'd be big enough for "real chickens"

I found them in the "Plastic Storage" section at Walmart for $4 each.

I cut a hole out of the bottom leaving a couple inches on the bottom to keep bedding in. The plastic on the bottom cuts fairly easily with a pair of sturdy scissors. There is a large enough lip on them to screw directly to the coop wall from the front, making them fairly easy to remove and clean if necessary. They measure about 10x11x14 inches tall. Here's a finished pic:

One of the coolest nesting boxes I've seen are the wooden wine crates (from the really good wine from France). You may need to buy them, but they look great and work perfectly.

Another idea I saw and I think I'm gonna try along the lines of a bucket is the like 27lb or 35lb buckets that tidy cats comes in. If you don't have a cat chances are you know someone who does and buys this litter so the buckets are free!

Well I am going to give the milk crate idea a try. I built a framework that will securely hold them, with a hinged slant roof over them. I can simply lift the lid back, and pull the nest boxes out for cleaning. I like that they are plastic, so easy to clean and disinfect. I hope the chickens like them, as much as I do....
