Homesteaders

We have a couple of old cook stoves at the shop. We use them for display. One uses gas and the other uses wood. The wood stove has a rotisserie with it. I don't know if they are in working order or not. It would take some work to get them usable I would believe. I'll take pics of them tomorrow and post them.

I have a 2 burner electric plate for canning because hubby prefers I do it outside. He hates the smell of vinegar and I make lots of pickles.

The bread will have to be made in the wood oven though. I will have it in a room that opens on 3 sides for summer use so it won't be bad.

it's far from beautiful but it's in working order . Then again who cares if it's pretty as long as it makes a good loaf of bread and a killer pot of chilli.

a wood cook stove is almost indestructible.

I rather like the rustic~rusty?~ look of it and it doesn't have to look lovely to do the job. A good brush down with a wire brush, rub in a little stove black on the side, oil on the top and you've got yourself a stove. Even the heat resistant paint tends to bake off after awhile, so I wouldn't worry too much about painting it. I'd clean it and oil it now so the oil has time to soak into the metal and cure out...you can help it do that by building little fires in it~not too hot~and letting the oil bake into the metal. Some of it will burn off and stink a bit but you'll soon have a more finished surface that is easier to clean, the more you oil and burn your stove.

Should be really pretty once you get that baked on patina going.

That's our plan tomorrow while kids are at school. Clean it just enough to make is sanitary then oil and bake. The smell won't be a problem we are doing it in the driveway. Lol. Can't bring it in until I clean out my back room.

Night y'all I'm exhausted.
