Homesteaders

I can, free and sell. I love providing friends and family with fresh goods. Plus I have a family of 8 to feed 3 times a day so we need lots of food.

We have a family of 8 too. I plan on buying Cornish crosses for meat this spring, and attempting my first meat bird experience. Suggestions and shared wisdom will be aporeciated.

THE most important thing? Do everything as if you are doing it unto the Lord. It changes every single thing you do and how you think about it if you are working for God instead of yourself. At that point you are just a steward of God's land, His chickens, His provision for you and yours and you can relax into the whole thing. Every big decision is His, all things out of your control are in His so if you have drought, too much rain, too many pests or just don't have good crops for any reason, predators get your chickens, etc., you don't have to stress about it, because He's in control. You've done your best but He's in control, so let it go.

When it's approached in that manner, it's all very exciting and peaceful, full of good things to experience and learn and you can start and finish each day in gratitude for the One who lets you live that kind of life.
I have to laugh when the politicians get all this and that about global warming and climate change or whatever they choose to call it. The weather man can only predict the weather but it's still the Lord who calls the shots.

One plants, another waters but it's God who adds the increase.

if I remember correctly, Shelby is a lgd that Reach is training for farm chores.
Actually shelby is an oeb(olde english bulldogge) that i am training for farm chores and for taking the kids in the wagon for parades. Sorry it took so long to get back to you I have been doing a lot of fundraising for an organization I am a part of and they have been keeping me so busy that my housework is falling behind.

as long as Shelby is good to you and the kids that's what's important.

Shelby does awesome with my kids and us, not so much with everyone else 24/7 but that is ok as well.. I love my dog but I need more muscle and hands than what i have and that is why I am training her to work with me, so I can try to get more done in a day. So far I am really falling behind in everything that is yard work related or garden; doing my fundraising for Zeus's Friends Pet Network. We had 2 events back to back yesterday and today and I had to take puppies up to the event and sit with them because nobody else could take care of them expect for me. I have been so busy that I haven't even been able to go to the library to look up building books for my rabbit hutches. Going to talk to the boss lady about that tonight.

Tis the season and I'm getting excited about it all...guess that never gets old to me. Time to butcher the excess chickens and can them up. Can't wait to see all those jars of goodness lined up for winter meals!

Decided to increase my butchering efficacy this year by 50%...added another bleach jug killing cone.

It's time for "chicken math"...the part where you subtract.

That is awesome. Do you cook the meat before canning, or season it in any way? It is something I am considering getting into. What recipes do you use the canned chicken for?

I raw pack it with just salt and water or broth in the jar. I like to add seasoning later in the dishes, as the seasoning/herbs tends to taste fresher that way. I do add seasoning to the broth, though, before it is canned. I am a simple cook, so I don't get too fancy with my cooking...usually just make soups, stir fry, pot pie, chicken alfredo, etc.

Sounds easier than I thought. I will be doing more research!
