Homesteaders

my best recipe book belonged to my great-great grandmother. From her original starts there have been additions by ever generation.

I am one of very few people my age who can cook using old world measures. I am also one of the few that still utilizes lard and milk fat. I figure if my granny who smoked, drank and enjoyed the nightly pipe lived to be 90, than the food couldn't be all bad.

It has to be better than fast food!

I find myself wondering if the "thrash" provides a better bleed out. Then I wonder if there is increased muscle tension with the thrash, resulting in a tougher carcass. Wonder if any one has ever done a study on such, either formal, or informal. Next time I buy bleach, I'll for sure get a 2 gal bottle, if I can find it.

Not so much a study as just showing my kids different ways to process. I have removed the head and let them run around. I have slit veins and put them in a construction cone. I have tied them by their feet. Honestly I haven't seen any difference in the meat. No toughness nor discoloration just beautiful, tender, tasty chicken that actually taste like chicken not saline solution. Again not a "study" just showing my kids .

Same here...over 40 yrs of killing birds, I've tried every way possible short of shooting them~axe, pithing, hanging by the feet and slicing, wringing, broomstick, just simple pulling and dislocation of the neck, even used a tailgate wire one season, cone and cutting the whole head off, cone and cutting clear across and cone and cutting one side.....well..you get the idea. I've gotten chickens dead in just about any way that's recommended and some that are not and truly, the meat is the same no matter what.

So let me start by saying I'm not aanti-religion nor do I push my beliefs on others.

What kind of bozo comes to someone's door and says "I'm not sure I am not offended by your sign." Seriously, is it unheard of for a person who owns guns and threatens would be intruders to also be religious?? I stang steady by my home being protected by the second amendment. I also stand steady knowing that God (as I know him) has his hand on my family.

Wouldn't common sense dictate that if a sign on someone's home offends you then walk away? These people seriously tried to lecture me about the safety of guns and the need for religion. Not just religion but THEIRS because the rest are not true.

How much more religious can I get without being a hypocritical jerk.

Maybe next time answer your door with shotgun in hand.

what did your sign say?

Let me get this straight...some stranger knocks on your door to tell you they are offended by the sign on your door, then they wanted to talk to you about God?

Did you tell them the signs were for folks just like them and, if they are offended, you are reaching your target audience?

I was cleaning a deer in the garage one time when some came to give me the Good News.. I have a 'don't be afraid of the dog, be afraid of the owner' sign w/a handgun.. no gun lectures...They were the same religion as my cousin, so I have an easy way to get them to move on when I tell them she is working on me... It is required that they go out and spread the Word, not an option...
I wonder if they thought I was a murderer They left quicker than usual.
