Hello everyone. Sorry to just jump in, I read the first few pages but don't have the time to go through 69!
We are wanna be homesteaders. Currently paying off debt and saving up for our land (got about 2 years left to go). We currently live in suburbia on 1/5 of an acre. We have 7 chickens, but that will be going up to 10 soon (we'll be setting some eggs in the incubator near the end of Jan). We also have 2 dogs, a cat, and a rabbit that thinks she's a chicken (she lives with them).
I started canning and preserving this year. Found a great deal on a 16qt pressure canner, dehydrator, grinder (both meat and grain), canning supplies (including over 100 jars!), and lots of other great things at estate sales and antique shops this summer. We also started brewing our own beer, hard cider, wine, and mead. Our garden will be growing by about 100sq ft this year. I'm going to try square foot gardening to see how much I can get out of our small space.
I also knit and am going to relearn crocheting soon (it's been YEARS since I did any crocheting).
I have a bucket of wheat berries sitting in my front room that I got to grow fodder for the chickens. Unfortunately I couldn't get my system down and they kept going moldy. I'd love to bake bread with it but my daughter has a gluten sensitivity. I'm wondering if fresh stuff would bother her as much or if she's having more reaction to something else in the bread. We do fresh gluten free bread for her but it's just not the same!
Our goal is also to be more self sufficient so we won't have to worry when those natural (or man made) disasters strike. Can't wait to get our land!
