Wouldn't something like that be revealed during the Title Search?

And, where do you live RTFchickens?

I'm not completely sure how that all works out but you gotta ask and get the answers before you sign. Sellers can be real, you know what's and realty agents aren't any better sometimes.

I kept asking for the surveyors map of the house we are in now. At the closing I find the house sat right ON the property line. There was no footage AT ALL.

We did buy the house but also bought the land next door that was for sale. It was a nightmare. The sellers lawyers yelled at me that "we're not trying to screw anyone." If I had it to do all over again I would have walked away. Not that I'm unhappy here. I think I aged 5 yrs over that one.

MAKE SURE YOU GET A SURVEYORS MAP BEFORE THE CLOSING AND GET ALL THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS. MAKE A LIST OF WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW. WRITE IT DOWN AND CROSS THEM OFF AS YOU GET THE ANSWERS. TRUST NO ONE.

Oh and if there is a septic, GET AN INSPECTION DONE. In some cases they are to be certified. Ours is not big enough for the house, but since there is only two of us we press on. It does need work though.

Great advice for those of us looking at buying land in the future. Thanks.

This purchase was an "as is" type of sale. We got a crazy good deal! Almost 60 acres with two ugly, but fully functional houses. Each had wells and septics. The property alone was worth the price the homes were basically a bonus! Plus it came with all the land and mineral rights, and clean title. We have all of that in writing from title company.
We touch national forrest on one whole side of the property. It's a homesteaders paradise with a large river loaded with fish within walking distance. Woods everywhere, deer come right up to the house windows. We even have porcupines for target practice, and wild bears that pretty much keep to themselves, but can be seen on occasion.

Not really a homesteaders paradise if you aren't allowed to have livestock ... good luck with your fight.

are these township ordinances or Home Owner Association rules that are giving you grief?
Sounds like a nice little spot even with all the troubles.

These are township ordinances, not Home Owners Association.
Our state has a Right To Farm Act, and courts tend to side with the farmer here. I'm almost hoping that they take me to court, so I can win. Then move on with my animals and stop getting bothered... The township knows that they likely can't win, so they haven't pursued us yet...
Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement!
Does anyone raise rabbits for meat? If so, any breeds of choice?
Thanks,
RTF

I recall the ALBC had a breed they were looking to protect and improve. I always encourage folks to keep at least on endangered or critical breed if they can. The point not so much the breeds but the gene pool.

Our newer breeds were developed from the heritage breeds. Without those genes we lose. IMO. Right now many of our dual purpose breeds have gone one way or the other. Kinda like putting all your eggs in one basket. We have chickens we keep for eggs and chickens we keep for meat, but for us small holders we need a breed we can keep for both.

Where rabbits are concerned they can be kept for meat and fur. Goats meat, milk and wool. The same with sheep.

Where chickens are concerned the Barred Rocks are being worked with but not many other breeds that were once the dual purpose breed of choice.

Too we need different breeds to recreate our "composite breeds".

I'm hoping to get heritage Rhode Island Red and White. I found a breeder on BYC who sells them.
I'm all about preserving some of the rare breeds.

Keep in mind that RI Whites are not related to the RIR's. They're two separate breeds in their own right. My concern with the "heritage" breeds is their utility. Do they live up to their original purpose or are they just pretty birds. This should be every keepers concern.

In Georgia the septic tank and field line are approved by the county Health Dept. Now we know they aren't corrupt. I don't know what level court made the determination but I distinctly remember a determination that the real estate agent represents the party paying them. So if the buyer is not paying the realtor and the attorney the have to hire one themselves. There are requirements for disclosure of these things and you have some recourse if defects or rights are not disclosed.

The only pickled eggs I have ever had were pickled in with pickled beets... they were delicious.. you had to hard boil them and put them peeled in the jar of beets.. :)
