Has anyone here ordered from Gurneys? I got their seed catalog yesterday and see lots of things I like plus they sent me a 50% off coupon.

I used to, but I have found smaller places are cheaper. They get their items from other growers since they have gotten so big . For example I ordered Black berries from Indiana Berry for 1/4 of the price .. Dixondale Farms for onions and leeks. Fedco or pinetree for seeds

I order some things from them, but not a lot. Things I cannot find locally like Hubbard squash. Not that it matters the deer seem to get to them every year....

That is the same coupons I got, it was just easier to say half off as it is $25 off 50, $50 off 100 and $100 off 200.

Jumping on the homestead wagon! I've been raising and processing our ducks here and hoping to get into gardening. This will be our 2nd summer here and I've got about an acre to work with for a garden.
This is a scream for help!!! How do I even start?!?! I need the basics. Prepping the soil, best hearty growers....

Lol, we eat everything! I grew up on a homestead, most of my work was in the kitchen though! I'm hoping to go with corn, tomatoes, beans, peppers, lettuce, kale (a must) squash, pumpkin, beets, broccoli, cauliflower. Onions, carrots and potatoes if possible.

Corn is hard, at least here it is, raccoons find it, you need to grow alot, they are very needy plants. Potatoes are easy. Just go through your potatoes and look for eyes. Cut the potatoe into chunks, a couple eyes per chunk, and then put in a paper bag for several days. After a couple days plant your potatoes and water.
Tomatoes and beets are easy too. Peppers are temperamental, at least here. Some years they do great, some not so much.
Someone made the tip of contacting your local extension office for advice, this way you would get the best advice for your local climate.

I get their news letter catalog thing but haven't ordered anything yet. I check prices and shipping prices. I'm still researching varieties to grow.

I got an "Italian seed" catalog that has Yellow pole beans. I like pole beans because of my back. My raised beds are not that high.

for your corn find an abundance of old manure (horse and chicken mix works best). Layer it 4-6 inches deep in the area you plan to grow corn. Poke a kernel in every 12 inches , lins needent be fancy, water and watch. You will get 1- 3 ears per stalk depending on variety so plant accordingly. No need to weed as the corn get tall enough to find any how. We eat a ton of corn. Oh and no need to till the area, the poo works its self into the ground very well. Just avoid walking on it as much as possible. Maybe do 1 foot wide rows of poo and 2 ft wide walk ways in between. Then add a few 1×6 boards to border your poo and you have a no fuss corn garden. The not walking on it gives the roots good lose soil.
