Homesteaders

Signed up for that chip drop will see how it will work out.
Yesterday I was in church for dinner/bible study and my friend called me.. she was on my driveway with a trailer loaded with cow manure for me

. It was a nice surprise since she had not told me in advance when she would bring it. Told me she was going out of town/would be busy this coming week and just thought of driving over. I plan on covering it with a black heavy plastic to give it sometime to age some more before using it.
Please send her to my house. Horse, cow , sheep, goat anything but dog or cat or human and I'd take it. As long as I can get my car in the drive I don't care. Dump it on the lawn.

Don't know if I'll get a load of chips but we do have some tree companies in the area. It would be great to lay a path to the creek. Plus into the glens in the woods. I hope to plant some wood suitable wild flowers in there. Some like Solomon Seal are nice to see. I have a Trilium on the side of my house I bought years ago.

If I do get the wood chips I will lay them between my raised beds and in an area that I will later turn into a garden and if any left start a compost pile

That's what I need them for. To build my garden walkways up to level. My garden is a mess right now. I just spent 3 hours roping off areas to plant in. Potatoes, onions and such go in tomorrow. Today the kale, collards and peas went in. Spring break means time to plant since my helper is home from school. She's 9 and obsessed with farming. Her next project is a cow to go with my cow and pig.

Do any of you own goats?

I so want to keep a goat or two but have not gotten the guts yet and would have to talk hubby into it too. We mainly eat goats instead of beef except when I make steak so raising some for meat would be a plus. I would also like to keep one for milk but at this time might not be feasible as we travel a lot and would not want to burden our friends with more animals to watch.

If anyone keeps goats here please chime in and tell us the costs of keeping them, would like to see if it's any cheaper to raise some and also how much I could sell them for. Friends keep asking me if I kept goats whether I would sell to them for meat so a ready market but it would have to be profitable not like chickens since roosters only go for $5 - $10 and that don't pay for themselves.

I think Jacob Sheep are very nice and I'd get them if I were younger. Did you know you can milk sheep?

Kale, collards, spinach and such greens are cold tolerant, mine are planted too and will be planting more. I think you could do cabbage at this time too.

I hadn't heard of the Jacob sheep, will have to look it up..

all my plants are covered so if it gets nasty again they should be ok. If no oh well I will plant more seeds. I'm still new to all this homestead stuff so I'm experiment with it all every year.

Goats are very important to us for many reasons. Meat, milk, cleaning up my tree line and just simply because I want them. However if it's not finance feasible then I will rework my plans. I also am getting 2 cows, 1 for me one for my daughter and 2 horses. Keep in mind right now I don't even have a barn or fencing so it will be a while. Our plans are not for today they are for the future of our family.

Are we done with the cold and snow in NYS? Can I plant my potatoes now or should I wait? I don't understand why the stores sell spuds so early if I can't plant the stuff noooooowwwww!!

I want to plant some stuff nnnnnoooooowwwwww!

I've started my tomatoes, zinnia, holly hocks, and okra, but is it too early to start pumpkins and squashes? How do you start your pumpkins and squashes? I've got high plastic lids over my other plants but won't pumpkins and squashes need more space?

I've a few of lids similar to this.
You'll need a LOT more root space for pumpkins & squashes - at least four inch pots. If you put them in something like jiffy pellets, by the time they are 'up' they will have roots growing into their neighbor's pellet...
