Homesteaders

I have a question also, if while removing the head of a chicken, who is soon to become soup, you close your eyes.... Do you save the stubs or the nubs first?

I bet some have no idea why I would ask that of you......
I have no idea what stubs and nubs are. I am interested to hear what they are. I don't remove their heads. I usually wring their necks.

I am so tired from the last few days of mowing and planting and weed whacking. I want to take a day off but the weather is so good for working outside. Sunday in the 90's. I do have plants to get in too. Basil and Zinnias and Nicotania. Lord give me strength.

I have been researching how to change the mower blade. It's duller than dull.

(Your fingers)
Ralfie you have an odd sense of humor :D

We live in the city on .25 acres but have managed a small garden, 2 orange trees, 2 blueberry bushes, 4 hens and 5 pets. We plan on moving to TN in 3.5 years and get around 30 acres so we can start homesteading for real. I will be on this forum lots when we get settled

You mean pruners you use for plants? Interesting. If I ever have to cull a hen, I'll have to have someone else do it. I'm not squeamish, just attached! Lol!

If you're culling for an illness it should be easier as you're helping the hen by relieving the pain she's in.

For food, well sometimes unpleasant tasks just have to be done. I've done a few of my chickens so far, doing a few more excess boys tomorrow. The process isn't exactly fun but they just taste so good afterward!

I make my husband cut off the heads. Not because I am squeamish or attached but because I am notoriously clumsy. I am afraid if I took anything sharp to a bird I am the only one who would get cut.
If I must kill the bird I use the broomstick method, no sharp objects there.
