Homesteaders

Not sure about you guys, but I am snowed in, it went clear up past my step last night. That might not be alot of some of you, and its not alot normally for me, but I have bald tires and have gotten stuck twice this week, so I am snowed in. Stocked up on soup and spaghetti last night at the store after my son's Christmas concert. Even went to the dreaded place and got him a chicken burger for being such a trooper when mommy got stuck only 20 minutes before we were supposed to be there and still remembering all of his words and for behaving while we were stuck. It is scary for him when things don't go as planned, especially at night since he is scared of the dark. Not sure how many people will show up for the cookie party tomorrow, but i will be baking up a storm for my next fundraiser. They even closed school today, so that is a first for schools in this area as well. But i guess roads are just horrible. Thought i found some meat rabbits for a great price, only to find out they sold last week and they never pulled their ad. But that is what is going on in my world, trip to Les Schwab on saturday, then head to my event and hope it goes over well, we are supposed to have temps on teh single to negative digits.  Stay warm out there and if you have any good soup or stew recipes let me know, im down to my last three potatoes, and not sure what to do with them...

Save them till spring and plant them :-D
One of my favorites us kids called stone soup growing up (wasn't no stone in it though) poor people food Lol, mom would roll up hamburger into little balls and cook it in water with diced potatoes about the same size. Burger and potato soup I guess nothing else in it but salt and pepper.
I still make it once in a great while but add chopped onions also, mom and dad would never cook or eat onions in anything, they're weird.

No onions?? What in the world. I would be miserable.

Nope never any onions growing up, parents would about puke if they bit into one. Imagine macaroni or potato salad with no onions... :-(
Bunch of us went up to the Adirondacks this Oct, dad and one of my brothers also went. The guys cooked up some fresh deer heart and liver smothered in onions. As me and my brother were piling the onions onto our plates dad said 'I don't know what's wrong with my kid's they all like onions' we both spoke up at the same time 'don't know what's wrong with you!' Lol! :-D

I can't even imagine it!!! But...must be a lot of folks like that out there. My DIL told me that she had never eaten deer meat~or any other meat, for that matter~seasoned with anything other than salt and pepper.

No onions, no garlic, no nothin'. When she married into this family was the first time she ever had eaten anything but salt and pepper in any of the foods she had been raised on...and very little pepper, I might add.

I can't imagine such a bland existence, especially when there are worlds of spices and spice mixes one can get nowadays.

Mac salad without onion?? What is the world coming to!! Has everyone gone mad!?

Back to the meatball and potato soup: I often make a stew with hamburger as the meat base. Simply brown that and add all of the other veggies and broth or water. Must have tomatoes in it. It's almost as good as beef stew, just not quite as fun with the texture of the meat. Made a chicken stew today from one of my culls. It was tasty, and will carry us through a weekend of easy meals. Taking a salad to friend's house tomorrow night. Most likely the last salad from my green house until Feb.
