Homesteaders

So wonderful to have a dog like that with the kids. It's a scary thing bringing home an infant with a BIG dog at home, always something in the back of your brain wondering if the dog will accept and be gentle, or will their prey drive be triggered. Your Lucky, love your dog, and your child, you have everything.
thank you. I feel blessed every day to have all I do. The kids don't even mind all the hard work and dirty clothes. The dog's get "paid" very well for their work on the farm.

Snow has finally fallen on the homestead. Steer doesn't seem to care, old horse is full of something and vinegar and wouldn't let me take a decent pic without dancing around and tossing his head, and the chickens... well, let's just say they had a bit of a traffic jam to sort out this morning. Me? I love it!!

Congrats on those eggs! My 3 girls have slowed down, but it's just me, so I don't need many, as long as I curb the baking.

It's 11* here this morning. A heat wave here in western MD compared to up north, but it's still cold! My outdoor furnace had burned down to only 80*, since filling it up late yesterday. Filled that furnace up and hoping it'll get back up to 170* where it should be, but it may take awhile.

Burr. It warmed up here but was 5 yesterday morning. That's cold for Oklahoma. Next Tue 21 above average the following Sat 17 below average. Get the outside stuff done while I can.

High here was 14*F. Hubby and I were out working for 3.5 hours. By the time we were done, it was down to 9*. I was toasty warm, dressed up like a Telle-Tubby. The only thing that got cold was my cheeks. But... oh my... when they warmed up, my "cheek" sinuses ached! I bet I chilled them! We got the job done: Installing trusses in the girl's sun room so the next snow or ice storm doesn't cave in the green house tarp roof. I'm super thankful for Hubby's know how, and his willing spirit to give up his time in this cold weather (which he hates even more than I do) to do this job!

I sort of fit the homesteader description. I've got numerous laying hens, some rabbits that can be butchered, a jersey milk cow, Dakota, who had a purebred heifer calf in May 2016 named Stella. My family also has a herd of black angus cattle, 3 horses, some barn cats and a LGD.
I'm from North Dakota also

Tooo many missed postings to catch up. catalogs are coming in and i'm planning the garden even though I don't know what the future holds. Taken a PT job and I'm just too tired. to try to catch up. Very cold out. It's hard to believe it's supposed to go into the 40's this week.

We were supposed to have a warm up but its was -22 the other day.

Showing right now. Its 1F but feels like -31F. We're supposed to get anywhere from 3-6 inches in the next 3 days, not to much so hopefully school stays in session that would be our 6th day in the last month...
Yesterday I threw some new hay where the chickens like to stand in the coop, and gave the cochins some more hay. My dad is going to get the snow blower going today while were at school and try it out in the calving pasture when we get home. While talking to one of our neighbors at the sportsman banquet he also said his cows are in the calving pasture. Glad we aren't the only ones.
