Homework *groan*

thats about how much my bag weighs, and since I started college this year, I have to carry it all day. no locker. sigh...
and since a lot of my work is online now, I not only have to carry textbooks, but also a laptop. and about fifty other things.

Homework (along with the content) teaches self-discipline and time management, two skills that students need to be successful in college -- and, I would argue, in high school as well.

Going into college without ever having done any homework would mean that a student will probably not be prepared for college -- in which 95% of course assignments, including reading and taking notes, must be completed outside of the classroom.

To me homework is okay in moderation. I don't think that a kid should have to do more than about an hour of HW each day. I understand the point about self-discipline and I very much agree. Kids are at school all day and should have time outside of school to be a kid. Now don't get me wrong, they should have responsibility, I'm just saying that two or three hours of HW work makes no sense to me.

I have four kids - one a sophomore, one in eighth and the twins are in sixth. Along with a ton of after school activities (they are in athletics and 4h and band), the kids usually carry a hefty homework load. Our kids are on the advanced plan and it is not unusual to be doing hw until 11 pm or so. Its a little ridiculous sometimes, but we are big "school" fans and I do understand. Just feel bad for them at night ...

Oh, I carry a laptop too. Every 7th and 8th grader in the state of Maine gets a MacBook or iBook for the school year, we can take it home and everything. But it sure is HEAVY...

Chicken Lady... Interesting to hear from a teacher! I agree that homework is important. Just why do dang much of it... in middle school? Maybe you can answer my question.

I really would get everyone you know to weigh their backpacks, and work on making a presentation about it. Thing is, you all have to make sure that the packs aren't 'loaded' with many extras. Keep the weight legitimate!

Yes, there are alaways a few extras, but they should be kept to a minimum or you will lose credability if you are going to try to make a point with facts. Weigh them and make a list of what's in them, including seperating out the weight of any personal items, like "One small zipper bag for personal items." If the backpacks include too much extra stuff, the PTA will just say that kids carry too much extra 'junk'.

There are things teachers can do to make it less necessary to have all your books dragged home every day. If you are issued laptops, then surely some of it can be loaded on your laptops, or some things can be sent home in handouts instead of using all the books all the time.

I feel your pain! My bookbag has:

4 binders, each teacher wants their own, 2 are 2 inch, 2 are 1 inch

5 textbooks, Criminal justice has 2 books that we have to have

2 workbooks, that are half the weight of a textbook

2 reading books, a 700 page novel I personally am reading (The Sands of Pride) and then the scarlet letter

ITS HEAVY! We have 3 minutes between bells, so I don't have time to go to my locker. So what, 13 books a day for 180 days? That's crazy.

i guess mine to wight about 15-25 pounds. about 5 of that being my laptop because i have a LD. but the other pounds are the book's the binder's and other school "stuf". I some times get alot lot of HW and to make maters
