Honestly - I have had chickens for years, yet?

So I hatched out a single Australaupe (mix) chick in July. She was my hope for winter eggs. Today, I am looking at her, she is definitely Redding up, I am thinking when are you going to start to lay? And really look at her... and see a arching tail feathers, rather fluorescent green, and shinny narrow feathers at the neck... Not going to lay, is she/he?

This is the second time I have had a black chicken that I thought was a hen for months. I hatched two more out in October, and I already know one of those is a rooster... just buffaloed.

No crowing yet, but I expect he will be soon.

One time I was going to sell a few 4-month-old POL pullets (cheap) to some young people at church just starting out. After I collected them I just didn't feel right about one of them so I pulled him out of the group. Yeah, a him. I almost embarrassed myself.

I can usually tell sex at 5 weeks but some can really be challenging.

The first one years ago, I thought was a hen, until he crowed one morning, when I brought down the feed. But I had only had chickens for a few years, and laughed at myself.

I could hardly believe it, when I looked at him yesterday. I am going to try and get a picture today, wish I had one a month ago, but we got a foot of snow.
