@ewok126, thank you for the pictures. It is amazing you can hand feed the bees. In your picture, which I have marked up, there is a third bee that looks differently. View attachment 1904828
You explained the two bees (circled in green) to be workers and the darker bee (in blue) as a drone. What would the little, almost solid gold (in red) bee be? Possibly a new hatch that hasn’t “darkened” yet? I was just curious.

LOL It is my pleasure and I am sure the same for all the others as well. Beekeepers tend to share any and all information as much as possible. We know the importance to humanity when it comes to the bees. Do not quote me but I think it is 1/3rd of all of our food comes from honey bees due to what they do. Last I read we are losing our bees due to pesticides and such. Then not to mention the fellow in Florida that lost 100's of hives to someone poisoning his bees because they did not like the idea of an apiary near their home. The FBI got involved in that one to find out who done it and the bee keeper also posted a $350,000.00 reward for any information leading to the arrest of whomever done it. If they get caught it will be a long jail time for them and also a federal offense on their record. Anyhow the bee you have circled in red that is the one that WthrLady was talking about and I quote "a newly emerged bee (just born), you can tell by the fuzz on her head and thorax" So Mimi13 You was correct on your guess YAYYYYY! Just my opinion here but due to your thirst for knowledge on honeybees, I think you would make an excellent beekeeper.

After mating, a drone dies quickly, as his abdomen rips open when his endophallus is removed. If I knew that my abdomen would rip open and my phallus would be removed well lets just say I would own stock in KYjelly and I would never go near a female EVER!

Just my opinion here but due to your thirst for knowledge on honeybees, I think you would make an excellent beekeeper.

Well, gee thanks, @ewok126. In anything I do, I do try my best at all times. I’ve never been one to half-a** anything. It’s gonna be my all or nothing. Just how I was raised. To quote my granddaddy, “If you don’t have time to do it right the first time, you certainly don’t have time to do it again!” That doesn’t really have anything to do with the bees necessarily, but just how I look at things in general.

I have been interested in bees for several years, but kind of put them on the back burner after I got chickens. I think there was just so much to learn since I had not grown up with chickens that it seemed I was never gonna learn enough to be comfortable, or comfortable enough in my knowledge that I could spread my interests elsewhere. I do not have all the chicken knowledge I’ll ever need, but after 3+ years I am more comfortable with what I do know. I hope that makes sense.

Anyway, thanks again for all of the information you have given.

Lol Yeah when I get involved in something I tend to jump in with both feet, legs, arms, head, then I bring the neighbors body parts into it. My daddy always said "Boy, if you going to do something do it with gusto or not at all." and man o man does my wife hate that. So does a lot of other people as well lmaooo but, that is ok. Some few do find it a good thing. Don't you just hate when a post gets buried! I know I do. Then of course I get worried over the stupid chit like, "Did they not think my post was valid? Did they think my question was stupid? Did they think I post to much?" Then I get self esteem issues. My mom always said for a man I am such a girl lmaooooooooo.

It makes perfect sense and you are most welcome! I am in the same boat with chickens. Even though I was raised around them as a kid I never paid any attention to the knowledge required. Now I am regretting that part but I love learning so yeah. That your grand daddy said has to do with everything in life, bees included lol. He is a very wise man!
