Cover the entire thing with the HC. If you don't the nasty critters will find a way in WAY to easy.

Do you have cage clips and cage clip pliers?
They work extremely well to hook hardware cloth to hardware cloth.

No I don't. I have galvanized wire that I was using to wrap everything together really well.

It is 17 gauge. Still think that's Ok? Also I should mention that they will be locked up in a coop at night. And I do mean locked up..I have this thing locked down like it's a maximum security prison. Lol idk if that makes a difference in the wire or not. I want my babies as safe as possible.

I personally found the wire a pain to thread through.
I do think the gauge is fine that you have.

A very good little video on the clips and pliers.

Those are the 'better' pliers....the cheaper ones stink...but they are joining 1x2 to 1x2,
not sure those pliers would work on 1/2" HC.
AM biased against jclips because they are very difficult to remove if needed(mistakes happen).
I used UV protected zipties, made a tool to pull end of ties thru, 12 gauge wire bent at tip like a crochet hook.

I have the same pliers as shown in the video. They do work on 1/2" hardware cloth. Anything smaller.....no way.
