Hope this site

On the old BYC setup, I think I recall loading taking no more than two seconds on Firefox. I guess that probably means I was spoiled, or I'm subconsciously editing my memories.

I completely understand the need for advertising and encouraging members to buy GFMs, but it would be nice if the site was a bit more friendly to slower web browsers. (Maybe the breed review sidebar and the big list of links at the bottom of the page could be removed? I'm not sure how hard it would be or how much that would help, but I imagine it would.)

Yes, we knew going in that any system we moved to would be slower than the last system. The old system was VERY fast compared to most systems, but it was also very bare-bones and unable to handle our growth. With that said, improving performance is top of our list of priorities.

version: 17.0.963.78, about 10 seconds. Even when i had Adds disabled it was slower (like 7)

That's very helpful, thanks! 10 seconds is definitely on the slower side of the spectrum. There are a million variables at play, but with ads showing the normal page load times should be closer to 4 - 6 seconds.

Based on many various measurement tools, prior to conversion we were averaging about 3.5 seconds per page load cross all our visitors. After the conversion we're at about 5.6 seconds per page load cross all our visitors.

Most users have a relatively fast experience, but across the board performance isn't as fast as we'd like it to be... which is why it is a top priority!

I just installed Google Chrome as pages here were taking anywhere from 7 - 14 seconds to load. It was driving me BONKERS!

WOW!! Now each page is loading in less than two seconds! No kidding! Wish I'd done this a sooner....I'm just not big on change!

Thanks for the tip, Nifty!

Thanks for the feedback! We know people don't like change... heck, I'm still on Windows XP even though it is a REALLY old operating system.

When we converted the site we were forced to decide what our "lowest comment denominator" would be. Do we cripple the potential of the site and forgo some great features to accommodate really old browsers or do we push the envelope and force everyone to be on the cutting edge browsers? Our decision, after months of intense discussion, was to do something in the middle... a compromise. We went with a system that works best on newest browsers, but will still function (even if very slowly / poorly) in old browsers.

Like a lot of the big decisions we've made for our community over the past 12 years, this was not an easy one, but so far it has proven to be a net-positive to the majority of our visitors.

All that said, we're determined to continue to improve performance, but we ask that our members meet us part of the way by updating their browsers which should improve your experience here and all over the web.

I was also struggling with the slow speed, but once I switched to Chrome my speed increased.

Then, I install Adblock, and my speed is just as good as it was on the old platform.

(not bragging, just hoping this will help someone out)
