Horn saw??

Dehorning via banding really doesn't work well with bucks. I've seen it tried a few times and the bucks just grow their horns back.

Plus most bucks, even with just scurs, the base is too wide for a band to be effective.

Okay thanks for the input everyone. I only need to remove the tip that is against his skin. My DH tried using big iron snips to no avail. These scurs are pretty thick in the middle, but flat on the sides. I'm afraid they'll bleed if I go very far. Someone suggested bands and even gave me some she had in her purse..lol...but I don't think they'd be effective on these.. even if I duct tape them in place.

I've googled every combination EXCEPT "dehorn saw".

I'll try that.

I can't ask on BYH, because I'm unable to sign back on for some odd reason

Banding is extremely painful and not without risks. It is certainly not a procedure to be taken lightly and should only be done if completely necessary. It by no means replaces disbudding at birth.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but if you just need to shorten the end a bit, what about a rasp? If you could keep the animal still long enough, it'd enable you to take off precise amounts without risk of severe bleeding or any of that. I'd think you could use a farrier's hoof rasp if there is good clearance between horn and head, or a woodworkers (or cook's) microplane if there is not much clearance. Or perhaps even a coping saw?

Pat, hoping not to have to deal with this in future with my wether, especially since he is very scatty and wild

Try googling "gigli wire saw". Once commonly used in veterinary orthopedic procedures.

How old is your buck?

I just redid my 8 month old buck. I used hoof nippers to break off the scur then reburned his head. Once you get the scurs off you just break off any that pop back up. Eventually they will get smaller and smaller. The only reason I reburned Rolo is I plan to show him.
