Horrible Monday! I lost 11 of my 18 babies today.

I am sorry to hear of your loss.

but dogs are animals, we love them and we want to have all of our pets together..dogs, chickens, cats everything else...but sometimes they cant all live in the same place together safely? Like some dogs will kill/chase/harrass cats, so owners make the choice not to have cats.

The dogs are going to do what they do - and yes, they are going to try to continue killing until the last bird is gone, they will be forever waiting for the opportunity to occur again. I know - I lived the nightmare over and over, trying numerous ways to outsmart my dog - I was too stupid to realize when it was finally her or the birds. Our last loss was over 28 birds because I forgot to chain a gate. June is gone now. She was nine years old and hadnt started hurting or killing chickens/animals until 3 years ago. They used to all share the same yard.

Another thing I will say though - the best survivors of our dog attacks were inside my kennel coops up on the roosts! Give them plenty of places to hide under or above. Many of my birds lived by getting under the Shed coop and up on the roosts. If you are going to keep dogs that kill and vulnerable chickens, maybe you can plan for the chickens to try to escape from the on site "predators". Which is basically what a pet dog is, just a known predator vs. a wild predator.

Its too bad about the dogs. Lots of people here on BYC have dogs and chickens, and there are strong feelings about our responsibilities for both. Take care of yourself, and your family and your garden.....Enjoy your remaining chickens, especially your little Partridge Rock survivor....she made it through the trauma and was even happy to see you! That means alot! No matter what your dogs did, you are a good chicken mom! Dont let their bad behavior sour your pleasure. Love the rest of your babies!
Take care, and BYC is here,
Tina/tfpets
(sorry for the long post)

Please make no mistake about my earlier post. If it ever came to it, killing Jasper would be the hardest thing in my entire life to do. But, no matter how much I love him, I'm not the only one in the neighborhood that has free range chickens.

If he became a chicken killer, for the safety and peace of mind of my fellow keepers of feathered friends, I'd have to put him down.

He wouldn't be the first dog in this neighborhood who had to be treated so. I just thank all of my lucky stars that Jasper is a big old dopey dog that half the time thinks he is a chicken too!! Especially whenever the air compressor is turned on. He tucks tail and runs to me for protection!!

I hope you can come to a decision that your heart and conscience can live with Criskin. Know that all of us at BYC are here for you with

compassion and understanding whatever your decision should be.

I'm sorry for your loss. I lost 29 birds this spring to a weasel (25 meat birds and 4 young pullets) and it's hard to accept. I'm glad my dog doesn't care about chickens. My pup is learning to respect animals too. I can't and won't keep a dog that kills any livestock or pets. It's too much risk to my farm. I would find him a home that doesn't have any others.

Thanks everyone for being so kind. It has really meant a lot to me to know that you all are thinking of me. Sadly, today I had to put down the BO cockerel who was badly injured. He was in so much pain that it seemed the loving thing to do. I'm just happy that out of my remaining 6 there are no injuries. Today they seem to have recovered from the shock and are gobbling up their food again. I am still deciding what to do about the dogs. My first instinct was to re-home them, and I am still considering it, but Hubby is certain that he can make the chicken run completely dog proof. We have to consider our son's feelings when it comes to the dogs because, in spite of this incident, they are very good with him and are his first real pets. Of course, I am panicked that the run will never be completely safe for my babies and I will not leave them in their yard unattended until I am 100% sure this will never happen again.

so sorry

I had stray dogs kill 6 of my babies and the image of the two dogs fighting over the one hen is still vivid in my mind and it happened over a year ago so I know how you feel. Give your birds some time because they will be nervous for a while about every sound or at least that is how mine were. Take care and

Well, I have a slightly happy update. My sweet hubby is redoing the chicken yard fence and also running an electric wire at the base. He assures me it will not shock the chickens but will shock the dogs should they walk up to or attempt to dig under the fence. He also promised that it won't seriously harm the dogs, only scare them. He has talked me into ordering some more chicks in the hopes that it will lift my spirits. I didn't think I'd get the breeds I wanted this late in the season but Ideal will ship my newest additions on August 19th, so there is that to look forward to. By some strange miracle exactly 2 of each breed survived. I have a male and female Buff Orp, a male and female Partridge Rock and two Barred Rock pullets (I only had female barred rocks to begin with). So even though Monday was horrible, the sun is peeking out just a bit on Tuesday. I know I'll never get Ogg back but maybe another goofy but lovable oddball will arrive this month.

Even better update! I found another barred rock! I thought I'd post a picture of the survivors at their dinner. I think the BR to the left is giving me a dirty look. Apparently paparazzi aren't appreciated in the coop.

So sorry for your loss and congratulations on your find. I lost one hen to a dog. I can't imagine loosing most of my flock. Have fun with the remaing members. They need your TLC.

Keep the dogs and just do your best to keep them separated. I own hunting dogs and they would carry the chickens around the barnyard, alive or dead, if given the chance. i do my best to prevent their crossing paths. The flushing spaniel loves to make them fly up in the air by sneaking up and running at the fence. I would never get rid of my dogs in deference to my chickens, but I am a 'dog person' I expect. The chickens are my pets but they are also livestock for us. Anyway, just my $0.02.
Phil
