Our roosters right back side (the entire vent) was infested with maggots, smelled and looked like he was rotting from the inside out. It was covered in brownish puss, dripping. We want to find out if any one knows what it may have been and if the rest of our flock is at risk.

We bought this rooster and 6 hens last weekend. We noticed his back area was dirty, but he was white. The area these guys were in in 24X7 was in a garage in a 10X10 pen. Horrible. He was fine this last week but today noticed he was being picked on more than usual and became extremely lethargic.

Thank you for any help.

It was flystrike. It happens when a lot of poop gets stuck in the feathers and a fly lays eggs in the poop. Then the maggots hatch and they end up moving from the poop into the bird. It's certainly not pleasant, but it's not contagious or anything. As long as your birds are clean you're safe.
