Horrified

Thing is the store manger didn’t seem to care either these stores should not be forced to sell ducklings chicks etc if they aren’t going to be cared for properly. It’s little lives not trash that can be tossed out. Makes me sick this goes on each year. Some one should have to be held liable.

I just called Tractor Supply and lodge a complaint. I spoke to someone who felt as much dismay about the situation as I did. I sent the pictures and she has sent them to the District Manager. She agrees that it is wrong and says this will be corrected.

I plan to keep an eye out to see if anything changes.

Felt better knowing that at least I did something to help them. Hoping that they do take action. It seemed like they will.

I just bought quail chicks from tractor supply, my boyfriend went and got them, said the guy didn't put the box together right and ended up dumping them out, dropped one on the ground, he was most of them didn't look good and there were dead chicks in with them and also dead chicks in with the chicken chicks. They do not take good care of them. Also, I called 2 tractor supply stores to ask what breed of quail they were selling and they had no idea.

That doesn't surprise me a ton. The employees aren't trained on chicks aside from the policy on how to do the daily care. So if they don't remember what the box from the hatchery said or if the box just said 'quail', then that's all they'll know.

Good! I can tell you from experience those reports do get passed on. The district manager will definitely be in touch with the store manager about it and hopefully it will get fixed quickly.

That’s so encouraging @Pyxis good for you @Spiase20 it’s great you did something about this! No one said these animals are people too @Sapphire Sebright just that animals should be treated as living creatures that is what they are. Animal abuse cruelty should never be tolerated.

My TSC wasn't like that. I just got chicks this week and they were fine, ducks and all. I agree that's not normal. I would lodge complaints higher and higher up on the chain until you get to someone who cares. If you're struggling to get high enough up on the chain I'd document it the best you can and then reach out to local news stations. Make sure you put the blame on higher management - the store employees lower on the rung probably don't have much to do with it. They're just minimum wage people doing what they're told.

I know that no one said that animals are people -- I just meant that, while I like animals, especially birds, and dislike people who abuse them, I'm not a person who is all that... how to put it... um... gung-ho about animal rights. I agree that abuse and cruelty shouldn't be tolerated and that animals are living creatures -- it's just that if I had to choose between, say, saving a human or saving six chickens from some terrible situation, I would choose the human.
This probably sounds pretty defensive, sorry -- just trying to make what I meant more clear.
Anyway, I'll stop right here so as to not set up for a debate that will hijack the thread... sorry for the digression.

We are stewards to every living creature on this earth. While animals aren't people, it's well proven that they have emotions and feel pain much as we do.

I ran into a similar situation with the local TS three years ago. Going in one Sunday morning, I went back with my husband to just check out the chick bins. What I found tore my heart out. Chicks climbing on dead babies in a comfort puddle in one end of the stock tank, crying their hearts out. Water full of poop. My husband had to take my arm and pull me away. I was ready to bring them all home and at the time was dealing with Mareks so it was out of the question.

We went up to check out and there were all the clerks standing there chewing the fat. I asked them if they were aware of the fact that they had sick and dead chicks in the bin, dirty water and they needed attention. They said well yeah, I know. I need to get back there...yadda yadda. Keep in mind it was Sunday and almost noon at the time.

I wouldn't step foot in the store for ages. Sometimes the way to deal with this sort of misuse is to hit them in the pocketbook. We took our business to Orschelns.

I have to admit that when I went back last year, the chick/duck/birdie bins were immaculate. They got our business back at that point.

Bless you, @Spiase20. You are a good person.

I went and talked to the manager. He said they were just wet. When I told him that isn't the case, these are sickly ducks. I suggested at least giving all of them a bath to wash the feces off, which was causing extreme skin irritation.

He said they didn't have the time or means to do so. I replied that I will be willing to do it right now for them, which he rejected.

In the end, he said "What do you want me to do? I can't do anything about it."

That poor lame duck is still there. I wanted to take him but my husband won't let me, we could get in trouble with the city and I'll get too attached.
