Horse Colic, UPDATE I lost him tonight

I second ducks4you. Definitely talk to them about a mash diet.

I'm so sorry for all he's been through. You've done a great job getting him back in shape. That means that he's absorbing the nutrition he needs. I've had starved horses that never got back in good condition, so I'm hopeful that you'll be able to weather this storm together.

Thanks you. I worm him with paste wormer every 3 months and rotate the brand. This was set up by the vet. The vet has checked him out in this area and he recommended yesterday that we change his wormer to a 5 day dose pack from now on, so I will be going to pick that up shortly.

That is good! I was going to suggest you check out that option with your vet. I had a PMU foal from Canada that had colic issues that ended up to be from worm infestation. Even though I had immediately put her on a deworming program, due to not being treated previously, she needed the "powerpack" dewormer.

**I would also recommend you check with your vet about daily dewormer options (still have to deworm every 6 months for tapes on this but this worked wonders with my filly...

Hope he pulls through!

Well I wanted to update everyone I lost Mr tonight. He had started colicing tonight at 7 and we did all the normal steps to take care of the colic. Shots, meds and I walked him for almost 2hrs he seemed to be doing well. Well when I first found him down he was cast in the barn and while getting pulling him around so he could get to his feet he jumped up and I fell down and broke my wrist. After making sure he was ok I let my partner take me to the ER, when I got back went to check on Mr and he was down again and had been so for some time, got the vet back out and he really didnt give much hope and as I was sitting looking into his eyes it was almost like he told me it was time. So while it broke my heart to do so I let him go. It hurts terribly and I will miss him more than words can say. But I know he will never suffer anymore.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is heart-wrenching having to make that decision, even when we know it's the right one and they have told us, in their so wise way, that it's time to let go. Blessings on you for the love and care you gave him. It is so sad to say goodbye; I hope soon you will be able to remember the joy you two had together, but allow yourself the time to greive for he was a true and dear friend. He is now galloping over green pastures, waiting for the day you again come looking for him.

I'm praying your mare's bred to him. And I hope your wrist heals quickly and well.
Poor Mr, (now I will be selfish, my horse, Jackpot, now has a buddy in Heaven).
Hang in there.

I am so sorry you've lost such a wonderful horse. I'm glad you were able to get him back though and give him a loving and happy last little time of his life. He sounded a real sweetheart. I hope the mare does have his foal. That would be wonderful.

I hope your wrist heals quickly.

I am so sorry about losing your horse. Can't imagine going through that. poor guy.

I wanted to suggest an equine specialist I know of locally in case this happens again. her name is dr bronson. She runs the bronson vet clinic just outside of bronson MI. I don't have horses, but I know she is an awesome horse doctor. She has her own horse facility on her property. I know a horse owner that uses her as a vet. I don't know if she could have saved him though.
