Horse stepped on my foot....

Some times they learn something that works for them Step on a foot and the people go away.... its a hard thing to retrain and even with due dilligence they can never truely be trusted. Glad your wifes foot wasnt broken. People ask me if I wear steel toed shoes with the big guys. I dont, even though technically I have read the literature they will not crush down on your toes and cut them off if a horse steps on you. Steel toed shoes are way too thick an heavy Id rather keep up due dilligence and be quicker on the ground. My days of working with a new horse are over though. I was never a trainer I have only ever trained my own one horse at a time.

I had steel toe boots when my TN/Foxtrotter filly broke my toe. It dented the top badly and crushed the ends. My Dad took it back to the shoe place and they were surprised a horse would inflict that kind of damage to that steel toe boot when it has the mass capacity for a ton pressure for it to even bend. HA HA! From then on, I hobbled along for four months with leather boots and never wore steel toe boots again. I still have that broken toe. Nothing the doc can do besides putting in a pin and dealing with surgery, I just taped it up until it healed.

I am too old and too slow to train horses anymore. I'd take a well broke, gaited horse anytime!

If I get thrown, I would be hurt for weeks. I don't heal as fast either.

She was either very smart or very evil--part mustang--her favorite trick was to make a path in the snow next to the electric fence--once the path was packed down enough she'd jump the fence and take off for the neighbors. I'd go down the road with a pail of oats to get her back and if she wanted to come she would, otherwise she'd hide in the neighbor's garage. He thought that was really funny.

Either way.. Just remember R*I*C*E* Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.
Get off of your foot, apply ice at 15 to 20 minute intervals allowing the foot to come back to normal body temp betwen icings.. wrap it up firmly.. not tightly! and Raise your foot above your heart. So, lay down, put a few pillows under your leg and foot and watch tv for a few hours.. You deserve it any way But, get it checked out..

Speaking from horse accident experience... always go tot he dr. I once came off of a horse, was in massive pain but I was determined that I only twisted something in my back... Nope--I broke it!! I cracked two vertabrae. Oops! Definitely go get checked out! A incorrectly healed foot could definitely cause problems. Your knees and back are affected by you feet. Just my two cents.
