this might be a little off topic but someone mentioned that slaughter houses used for horses were not humane, but what is the difference between slaughter houses used for horses then those used for cattle and other livestock?

Just do a little online research and you'll find some pretty gruesome stuff. The slaughter houses were trying to treat the horses like cattle, and horses and cattle are not one in the same.

They were transporting horses in the doubledecker cattle trucks, I've heard that these are not tall enough to accomadate larger horses. Heard stories about horses getting their legs caught in these trailers. Holding pens designed for cattle are too low to accomodate a horse's height, leading to sores and injuries on the horses backs. Also, I remember reading one story that brought tear to my eyes, a buckskin that was skittish wouldn't hold still for the killing blow. He would raise his head above the workers reach, so they took the bolt gun and shot him in the shoulders before they shot him in the head. Yet another story was a lame gray that had fallen and gotten trampled in the trailer, he was too large to drag off the trailer so they took an electric cattle prod and rammed it up the horse *ahem* trying to force the horse to his feet and out the trailer.

The other problem with horses being consumed by humans is that many medications administered to horses are not good for humans. Just like you would shoot up the chicken you're about to eat with animal medications and then eat it.

Not saying that cattle slaughter houses are any more humane, just did more research on horses.

That is right. The transport conditions can be even worse than the slaughter house. Horses are packed into trailers meant for cattle for days while being taken across the border with no food or water and mares foaling in these trailers....It is very gruesome!!!!!!!!!!! Most of the horses aren't killed with the bolt to the head either. They don't want them to die first because they want them to bleed out and horses are hung up still alive and aware bleeding to death as well. They are butchered alive. The list goes on and on. LIke Wolf Kim said...do some research on it and it will make you sick to your stomach for days!

I think most cattle are inhumanly treated for food too. That is why we don't support the commercial meat industry. After my own research on cattle too I totally stopped eating it and we only eat what we hunt/raise. I am sure there are some reputable slaughter houses out there somewhere but I have yet to see one.

The auctions ARE nasty. The last one I went to had three newborn foals that sold for $8 each. They were sweet little things.. I often wonder what happened to them. Same day several well broke kid-safe horses sold for $30-$100 each, and going by the people that were buying them, they were going to meat. I agree, I'm not against humanely killing an animal, but still a bit sad. Especially a nice white mare, I think the auctioneer said it was 8 y/o. She was blind in one eye, but there was a little kid up on it, rode nice and smooth. The kid got off and all he had to do was signal and the horse came up to him. I admit, would have loved to bring that mare home and put her in the pasture.

Oh I see, so they stole it from their owner. I agree with you on that, but when there is an unwanted horse, the US should be allowed to slaughter horses with people who know what they're doing.

The horses should be left alone. We have wild deer don't we? Why can we not have wild horses roaming? I think its one of the beautiful things about US and I don't want all of them gone forever POOF! I don't think they should be fenced in either they are wild animals and its cruel to do so.

Not to start something, but weren't you the one who had the deer in her garage? But if your talking about Wild Mustangs, I do believe they should have a safe area for them to be free. A nice very large wide open area for them, even if it was fenced in, wouldn't be bad.

Yes, you guys are right, I was in a major hurry when I posted my last post, but the transportation methods used for those sad horses was apparent when I lived in HOT A$$ HOUSTON. Traffic jams lasting hours in 105 degree heat and high humidity. I've seen it first hand. And they are right when they say the poor scared mares are foaling in those cramped hot boxes they call trailers...and yes they were too short for horses to stand properly...such misery.

These were not all unwanted broken down horses at the end of their life either. Most were bred to be slaughtered. So now that they don't slaughter it will hopefully stop the cycle of madness!!

Again, not against humanly ending a horses life...key word HUMANLY.

I suppose this is what really irritated me about what happend to the horse in the op. There is a glut of unwanted horses out there from the slaughter plants closing and from the economy, why STEAL someone's dear pet!!!!!!!!! I just can't get over it! That poor family!
