Horses!!!!!!!!

I had friend use hay for her mare when she foaled and everything went just fine with hay. It just sticks to the foal a bit more and clean up after when u can so none gets eaten. ( she probally won't it eat it but done mares might).

I've always foaled on hay - and one of the main reasons to choose hay is that it is fine for it to be eaten....unless you are referring to the placenta as far as the concern of consumption- which in that case it's good to collect and inspect it anyway to be sure it's complete.

That's right, you want a bucket handy so when she delivers the afterbirth you can collect it clean. Then the vet will inspect it to make sure its all there. I've forgotten how long it takes to come. I know we had to get a vet to help because three hours after the birth it hadnt come yet. It's important, but possible to forget in the excitement of watching the foal take its first steps! Can't wait!

Thanks. Like I said I don't have any straw and probably wont get any, so hay was all I had left to use.

I remembered a mistake I made that might help to know about. I assumed she'd birth in the night as they usually do, so in the daytime I let her turn out with an old pony for company. Well she started labour at high noon under a shady tree and the pony SPOOKED at what was coming out of her back end. So when I got there my first job, before I could even go check on her, was to get that crazy pony out of the field. Comical now as I remember it but a bit scary at the time. How are things with Sugar?
