Hot Weather Egg Delivery! Day 2!

When mine were shipped earlier this summer with the heat, I let them rest between 6-12 hours at room temp and then put them in the incubator. I got a good hatch despite the heat and many of mine came cross country. That said, I only candle when received to check for cracks or really porous shell. I toss those with even miniscule cracks, and any that have huge porous issues. It wouldn't hurt to let them sit for 24 in the incubator with the humidity/heat controlled and then begin turning. JMO. Good luck with the eggs!! So much fun!

AHHHHHH

Why did I do this

I added some digital thermometers that I borrowed from a friend today, and they're vascillating like...literally almost 10 degrees.

~95-103 or something! The incubator is still air, but my mercury thermometer and my other digital thermometer that has a hydrometer read much more steady temperatures- I've had it running almost a week with no problems until these new, scary thermometers. They're supposed to be super accurate too. D:

Auugh, I almost wish I didn't add them! I keep fiddling with the hot water heater thermostat in a panic. Am I going to kill these things? Which thermometer reading should I go with? The new ones change temp so fast I don't even know what to do! I have one at the bottom and one at the top at 'egg' height, which is where I have my other thermometers.

I don't know what to dooooo...

ok.. first .. stop playing with the temp.. (for now)
second.. remove the thermometers and place them all side by side.. give them a good 20 minutes to get to room temp.. then see which are reading the same.. if any are way off.. set them aside and ignore them.. then put the ones back in that are closest to the same reading.. when you make an adjustment to the temperature wait a while (i would say at least an hour) before you fiddle with it again..

edited to add: no idea what kind of bator you're using.. so that's why I said at least an hour

I took them out and am just going to give them back to my friend. They both read hotter than the mercury thermometer and the other digital I've been using, and it's frankly not worth the headache.

The temp is back where it was before I fiddled with it, and it was only wonky for like....maybe 30-40 mins, it ran a little low for a bit. I put it back to where it was and am LEAVING IT ALONE.

Ffff. I think I need a nap.

that makes me feel a little better. I have 8 eggs from PENN that is suppose to hatch Aug. 29th and 8 eggs from Florida I just set today. Both were set out at room temperature for 12 hours with the pointy end down. I hope I didn't burn ~$70 because I didn't put them in the incubator right away. I think I'll be sick

I let me last batch sit for 6 hours then set them. I've never waited much longer than that. Our house stays around 90 degrees, so I don't want to leave them out too long.

Before using any electronic thermometers, replace the batteries!

Good luck with the hatch!

Ok, it's official, I'm going to be totally bananas by the time these things get to hatch day.

Day 2, took them out of the egg carton, marked them with x's and o's on each side, and set them in the grooves on the rubbermaid lid I fitted to act as a kind of 'egg holster'.

As long as they sit in the grooves right I can just roll them quickly with my hand to move them the 180 degrees and minimize the time the 'bator stays open. One of them was being stubborn and kept trying to roll right back over, though.

I candled two of them quickly just to try and check the air cells- I could clearly make out an air cell on the first one, and sort of on the second as well, but the second was much darker. It might be that the incubator light was throwing me off though, but I was scared to do it with no light because WHAT IF IT DROPPED IT? I wanted to wait to candle them really well till the end of the week, since theoretically I shouldn't be able to see anything right now anyway.

I...may have set up a livestream with a webcam on my digital thermometer's readout last night so that I could keep checking the temp/humidity on my cellphone while we were out of the house. Seriously considering investing in a cheap webcam though so that if I have to leave for more than a few hours and I have my laptop with me (for example, going to work) I can keep checking on them.

ME? Obsessed? NAH.

I'm just worried cause this 'bator is so tiny and this is my first time and I only have 5 eggs. I don't really have any margin for error.
