Houdans

Pics
Puddin Fluff, I might have missed it...where are your Houdans from?
U of AR, Dr. Bramwell's birds.

I didn't get an answer earlier about whether the girls have a comb or not. I am concerned that one of my girls may be a guy. One of them was obvious early, but the second is now developing nubs while the third has nothing.

BTW I was stationed at Elmendorf in the early '90s. Loved it there.

I just got two houdan chickie doos a couple of weeks ago, more of an impulse purchase w/ some other planned chicks and have just now started doing some research on them. (very out of character for me impulse purchase but they were soooooo cute) I've read most of this thread tonight here are a couple of pics of the two from the youngest shots I have of them the day I brought them home June 16th through yesterday. I don't have many pics yet of them, but will definately add more as they grow.

And here are some houdan x NN

These pics are over a week old their top knots have gotten bigger and I love thier "Abe Lincoln" beards.

Welcome to the Houdan thread. I am a new owner as well. Mine are now 12 weeks old (see pics above). Your babies are cute but sorry, I just can't say that about the NN/s

. They kinda freak me out! Can't wait to see how yours grow. This thread is kind of quiet compared to other breeds as there are not alot of owners out there aparently.

Yes, I noticed it was a little on the quiet side. The hooda (nn x houdans) of this generation are going to be black, but I am going to cross them back to the mottled houdan and hopefully end up w/ a mottled top knotted NN. But I also want to breed the houdans together too. I only have two so time will tell if that will be possible or not.

I was a little nervous about posting the cross pics wasn't sure if I'd be stepping on toes

It doesn't bother me. I love crosses and mutts too. We were just lucky enough to be close to a great Poultry Science program and had access to free eggs of any type they had. We did our first hatch this spring with Salmon Favorelles, Mottled Houdans, Araucanas, and silkies. My daughter is dying to cross breed some in the future. As we have only one pen, I am sure we will have some mixes and pures without much effort once the boys grow up. I look forward to visiting with you and seeing how your, uhhhh, cuties

, not so cuties

, turn out.

I just came in from taking a couple of pics so as soon as I can get them processed to a smaller file size I'll post some.

Some pics hot off the press

Are you still sticking w/ the "not cute" label? lol lol lol

The black top knoted ones are houdan x NN

Thought I'd share some pictures of my 18 week old Mottled Houdans - they are from a breeder who kept the best from a couple years back from McMurray. This would be the third generation. After the culls and what not. I had them vaccinated for ILT with the rest of the flock, and the vet has never vaccinated a houdan before, and this June alone he did over 8,000 birds.

Her crest is heavier on one side, is there a fix for this?

Oh how pretty, I can't wait to see what my two chickie doos look like.

Your female's not just different in each side of her crest, but her beard too. Is she different on her body one side from the other too?

How much do you think they weigh???
