Houdans

Pics
When we did our hatch, I did it on day 8. It was my first time, I didn't have a candler just an LED flash light. Worked pretty good and since the Houdan eggs were white, they were easy to see. The Favorelles I couldn't see so I just left them all in and hoped for the best.

That is all I have too an led flashlight, I don't think I'll have any trouble w/ the houdan or araucana eggs, they were almost white too, but may have a little issue w/ the NN eggs some of them were very brown.

Sept 17th.
I set to hatch out on the 20th (my birthday).
Easter Egger rooster out Naked Neck hens and Naked Neck roo out of Easter Egger Hens.
the day I switched them back a Possum got Junior my (EE) rooster.
Now I have a Buff Laced Polish rooster in with my EE hens.

Oh and to keep this on topic: How about those crested EE's that will coming off, from Houdans and Polish.

Wow! That late! Our only other experience at waiting for eggs was with our 4-h pullet chain birds last year and they started at an amazing 15 1/2 weeks. I did some reasearch on more normal laying times and understand 20-24 is average but, as usual, is breed dependant. Spike certainly still acts like a chick to me. She doesn't want anything to do with being mated bythe Cockrel and the only interest she has in the nest box is roosting on it at night.

Thanks for the info.
welcome and its funny that ur Houdans name is spike my favorite chicken was my first Houdan Spiket!!!

I started with three Houdan chicks but now I only have one roo left. His tophat/crest is rather spiky and his mottling is heavier on the chest than back. Correct five toes and legs are black spotted. He's a bit larger than the polish but not by much. Any opinions to offer on my Houdani? Trying to decide whether to keep him and try again to find/hatch girls or give up on this breed. None of the eggs I purchased hatched and as mentioned above, he was the only one of three chicks to reach maturity.

u could try and sell him for like $15 but really it would be worth finding more hens to help this heritage breed.

Are you located anywhere near I-40? I don't have anything to offer you right now, but we travel through there in the spring usually and by then my girl should be laying and maybe I could hand deliver some eggs to you to keep your line going.
