Houdans

Pics
Looks so much like my boys. Now I'm not the only one with a not so great crest and wattles anymore! Still, his crest is better than both of mine combined.
Interesing that you got the wattles, but no V-comb (that I can see)

My big boy is about 14 weeks, and my little boy who has just started to try and crow is 7 weeks. The big one has taken over the balcony and thinks the
whole neighborhood is his now. He loves to sit on the lighting rail and crow, ALL DAY LONG.
Poor neighbors.

Here are a couple pictures.

And the young one showing off his new red comb and growing wattles (and lack of crest).
He thinks its cool to slick it back on the wet water jug. Maybe the girls agree?

I think this has been discussed before on this thread, but that male sure looks to have the Leaf comb that we don't see in Houdans here in the US. Looks good. I prefer the bearded variety, but I would like to have the Original comb on my Houdans.

It would be really interesting to combine the genetics and get the really large bearded *crest with the full wattles and leaf, or V comb to have a firey red puffball rooster.

Hummm... Think I have a new goal. Muahaha~

EDIT: Messed up comb and crest again. Think first type second... aye-ya

I think the comb is the reason your houdan's have a smaller crest. Maybe it will get bigger, maybe it won't. I know Gigi took longer to get his full crest. At 14 weeks he looked like:

A few more weeks.. My punk rock man :p

Fully developed crest. I still find he's gotten darker since this picture.

in the first pic Gigi looks nothing like mine does .. mine has more of a comb and wattles yours just has a little more better crest but mine is still young ... i love my roo houdan if you look at the back of him his crest feathers curls into this circle type thing its weird lol

This just makes me laugh and laugh-- the juxtaposition of enthusiastic crowing rooster and city... who is dominating THAT skyline? lol

Aoxa... my Polish doesn't have toe sprigs but even the big breeders will pluck the crest for a more uniform break between the black/color and white. It makes you wonder what all the fuss is about in these other threads about SOP and breeding and culling for traits if they are just going to pluck anyway. But then... they can't all have pretty birds like aoxa (jealous tint to my smile here.) I just don't get it. Thanks for being so sporting about this aoxa. Not everyone would let us discuss showing and their birds etc like this.

The reason they look different is because your boy doesn't have a beard like Gigi does. They are brothers though. The guy I got him from only has 1 roo with the hens. http://www.activelifefarm.ca/ourchickens.html Here is where I got them from. You scroll down and see his images of the parents. They were all free ranging when I picked up the chicks, as it was past breeding season. All of the parents had beards, so they may have chicks with beards or ones that are partially bearded. :idunno I do find that any crested breed with a beard has a bigger crest as well, so that's something to note.

Here he is right before you got him. That is a smooth sizzle chick with them.

Decaprio who????? I'M KING OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!!

an interesting thing i have discovered about the leaf comb... when i 1st had my Houdan hen i had no male for her so i had her in my grow out pen with a few other birds... she started laying and i went ahead and set the eggs... i was mostly wanting to see if the male was fertile but was also wondering what i would get... figured could always eat them or sell them as layers... the rooster is from my Lav Marans project and is 50% Orpinton and 50% Marans... so he has a straight comb... most of the chicks just have a straight come that splits in the back to a v shape but a couple of males have a perfect (as best i can tell) leaf comb... so now I'm thinking i might try to keep in going in these birds... I'm not sure i want another project and I'm not sure as bad of shape as the Houdans are in if i should try to breed for Lav or not... but it has given me an idea of what the leaf comb is genetics's wise... i have been playing around with the idea of crossing the Houdans with a Dorking to try to add new blood and size... now I'm wondering if i used a straight comb dorking if i could bring the leaf comb back as well...

i have done a few searches and am coming up with zero on leaf comb genetics's... and one have any idea where to find such a thing???

and any thoughts on the project Lav birds??? i am not sure what i want to do with it right now... good bad or ugly i would like to see a discussion on it... also on the cross with a dorking any thoughts???

ill try to get some pic's soon and post them...
