It's a cross right now. A sizzle is pretty much a silkie with smooth feathers or rough feathers (frizzled). This one above is first generation. That is interesting. I would have guessed it might be a cross or Sultan... although the nostrils aren't quite right. Not sure what a sizzle is.
No experience at all but somewhere in the back of my mind from many of the houdan articles I read I seem to remember that if you crossed the "v" comb w/ the single comb you would get a leaf or butterfly type comb.Sounds really interesting. I'm underinformed about all of the specifics for genetics and how it affects comb development. Still I'd like to read about someone's experience with it. Go for it!
Looking great!!! How many houdan chicks do you have?
Nope. I think the tufted gene in Araucanas is one of the fatal genes, as well as something with Japanese Bantams, but not for frizzled chicks. Two doses of the frizzled gene makes frazzled chicks which don't fare well in the weather extremes, but it's not fatal. Are sizzles the ones that come from frizzles and have a fatal gene for producing offspring. So any chicken that has frizzles has silkie in it???? I wondered where the frizzles came from.
Just call it self blue. Apparently lots of genetic gurus get bent out of shape if you say lavender. The colour term is technically 'Self Blue"The dorking is the way to get size. A big time breeder and judge told me this. I believe it. IDK what to feel about your leaf combs. I don't see the APA admitting them. I am more concerned with purpose- size, egg laying, hardiness and then SOP so colors aren't in my plans at all. The mottling is hard enough.
If you spread yourself too thin it gets hard to focus on anything. With that said, I'd love to see your Lav Marans.
As for the genetics.... try asking one of the folks over seas or fowlman. He knows WAY too much not to know at least something about it.
From what I've read they started w/ leaf combs and that is still standard in Europe, but the "v" comb was cultivated and preferred in the U.S. and that is SOP in the US.The dorking is the way to get size.
