Houdans

Hey! what's everyone doing? anyone hatching Houdans for spring? We are just down to our girl. I sold off the Roo today as we had 3 total roos in the flock and he was being people aggressive and it wasn't letting up. Wish I had room to make a seprate pen and do some breeding. Maybe in the future.

Waiting on reports from everyone else!

I still have a month or so to wait before getting my Houdan chicks. Excited about that.

We have a Bernese Mountain Dog pup coming this weekend. We have quite a bit of time on our hands these days.. Need to do something. Good time to get a puppy.

Just finished hatching out some WC Blue Polish. When I started them, I threw in several houdan eggs but all were butt-kiss. Now 3 weeks later I broke a few open and it looks like bulls-eyes so I believe Asia is doing his job again. Darn metrosexual roos. Like to look all pretty-boy and you have to wait till he is in the mood to dance with the ladies. *hee hee*

I will be switching two other roos around. One group is last years so are all related. Going to take the roo out of that group and place an unrelated roo in. Then after a month, will start collecting eggs and see what happens there. Very hopefully as Spike has already been spotted mating with the other hens so it should go well. Spagetti I likely will hold back till I get a breeder pen empty and try him with a few hens.

Then I have Buster whom I am just waiting for a breeder pen to become available.

Then when I move Buster, I likely will move two girls in with Swoop my half breed houdan.
He is huge with wonderful feet. Very hopefully that will bear fertile eggs.

My darn problems are lack of breeding pens. Lack of warm weather to get this darn snow melted. Finally the will to get down and build those pens I need.

This year I am hoping to be busting out with houdans out my ears =P

u don't have to wait a month to save eggs... a hen will be fertile from the new roo 24 hours after the 1st successful mating... so i normally wait 3 days as long as i know that the rooster is fertile...

where are your Houdans from??? my few are from the UofA and i would love to get some more bloodlines to work with...

I'm in Canada. My houdans are from McMurray, Ideal, Performance Poultry [canadian] and my own.

When I have hens that have been with other roos and I swap roosters, I always wait 1 month to make sure the breeding will be from the new roo.

We went to a Poultry Seminar and were told that the hens have a (for lack of knowing the scientific word) internal pouch that they hold the semen in and that the most recent mating semen is on top so whoever mated the girl last will be the daddy to the first eggs. (Elias correct me if I am wrong on this, you were there.) So as long as they are successfully hitting their mark and the male is fertile, your eggs should be good to go.

I have some hatcheries chicks in the brooder and houdan eggs in the bator from U of A lines. The eggs' air cells were not in great shape, so fingers crossed for a decent hatch from them. My houdan adventure is starting.
