Houdans

Pics
Hey!!! Where is every one? I have been busy all Oct. and haven't been on but looks like I haven't missed much. Has Skittles layed yet? I am still waiting on Spike too. Skittles is about a month ahead of Spike so I am eagerly waiting on her progress.

Nothing yet Puddin...

She was born March 4th 2012. The Easter Eggers from the brood started in August. If she is laying, she is hiding them. Her pelvis seems spread enough to pass an egg...

The breeder I bought them from said they are early to mature.. Well not Skittles. :p

19 weeks, over by about a day.
I know she could be a slow grower, but I figured we'd see some kind of activity change after 14 to 16 weeks.
Nope
Eat, poop, sleep, be cute.
No eggs in sight.

Here are a couple pictures.
Luckily we have a lot of chicken TV to watch on the balcony.

And a close up of our roosters crazy crest. Nice and flat, always good for a laugh.

She wouldn't start laying between 14-16 weeks. Not even my RSLs have started laying and they are 15 weeks. Any time now girls...

I think Houdans would start to lay more commonly around week 22, but I could be wrong.

Anyone with older houdans that could let us know what to expect would be awesome!

Did I mention that the 6 other houdans I kept are 3 girls and 3 boys exactly? The boys are younger than the girls. I have a 2 promising girls, and one that has a lopsided crest. She will probably even out a bit.. Skittles is similar. It's heavier on one side if she gets it wet or dirty. Once I wash it, it stands up evening.

Everyone is looking great. I love the pics. I need to take a few new ones. Spike and Zeus were hatched mid-April and that is why I am anxiously following Skittles progress/lack of progress with the egg laying. My other pullets have been laying a while now no go on the Houdan. She is my only white egg layer so there will be no mistake when she lays. I keep thinking her face is getting pinker/moving to red and that maybe that is a sign she is coming in, however, none of the boys are interested in her, she does no squatting and no "I'm about to lay" squak. She is my most cuddly bird and runs to be picked up whenever someone is close. Her mate, Zeus, however, needs to learn something about romancing the girls. He is more of a jump on it kind of guy which is not pleasing the other ladies.

Glad to know I am not alone on the waiting game.

How are your boys temperament wise?

Gigi likes to chase visitors.

Mostly men.. but he has chased my fiancée who ran. I felt like that was completely uncalled for (her running). If he even drops a wing in front of me, upside down he goes. He's full of hormones right now. None of the boys let him mate...

Nothing works better than the flip.
Kicking, yelling, what have you...

Our big rooster has had superjuice going through him or something and is more than willing to chase peck feet and try to take on all 3 dogs. The youngest loves it, but the other two and wife have different opinions.

I put him on the flip program for a couple weeks and he's a good boy now.
When I'm around he's good to the girls, doenst peck and will even relent and let me pick him up to move him around.
He does get a good neck scratch to help with all the chaff on those hackels, so he has an excuse to tell the girls.

However when the wife is out, or mother in law is playing with them he's all tesosterone and tries to mate everything in sight.

Anyone who has a problem rooster just grab the feet and flip em, works wonders.

About the eggs, yeah I thought 15 or under 18 would be early. Still her comb went super flush and we had hopes. Now its getting to be time, espicially since she looks like a rooster in disguise. Some days I'm expecting a crow instead of an egg.
