House Goose Thread

I don't have any grass, but I did just start a fodder system so in about 5 days I should have some wheat sprouts for her!
She does get to go outside whenever I'm outside, but now that school has started back up that will be only a couple times during the week and on Saturdays. The rest of the time she is inside with us. The rest of the family likes her and all, but she is MY pet and so is MY responsibility so no one else is willing to take her out to play, they just let her run around the house trying to eat the dogs long ear fur =P
No grass? Well, I'm sorry to say this, but that's not good. It's like trying to raise a vegetarian cat.

Geese primarily eat grass. A few wheat sprouts won't get you anywhere. Aside from that, she needs the sunlight to develop an adequate amount of vitamin D. If you want to keep her as a pet, you need to let her graze outside for several hours every day.

Please reconsider your arrangements for Trina.

I think we need a house goose thread!
If you google House Goose there is VERY little information out there. I don't know just how popular having a house goose really is, but I would love to get in touch with some other people who have pet geese living in the house with them!
Let's see if we can't share our stories and knowledge and make this a fun place for us house goose owners to chat and swap info and of course pictures!

This is my House Goose (Gosling) Trina
She has a medium sized dog crate with pine shavings, and her food and water. This is where she hangs out when I'm not home and where she sleeps - I'd rather only diaper when I'm home to change it as soon as she messes =)
She currently has 3 diapers (two of which I made, and will hopefully be able to make for her in the future), two pink with white polka dot and one blue patterned one.
She has outgrown the smallest, almost outgrown the second, and the third is much to big LOL
She loves to go to the Feed Store down the street and visit all the people. She has also just recently started visiting Bookmans! She's not big enough to put a leash on and keep people from stepping on her though so she rides in my purse until someone wants to hold her.

Ones week old, first day we brought her home

2 weeks old - first diaper

3 weeks - largest strap setting on her baby diaper

First day outside running around free - mostly following me around lol - she found a nice spot to crash after all that playing

Post daily evening bath

First trip to Bookmans!

Hope to hear from others soon!!!!

Hi Kuku!

I used to have a house duck. Maybe a book needs to be written on house geese and ducks. It has been done on rabbits. I am serious, REALLY!

Kuku...

Maybe you can plant some clover or lay an area with sod for her to graze. If you can get chopped Timothy or Fescue and chop it up, she will eat it for now. A bale would last a while, but at least she would get her grasses. Make sure you have grit for her.

I think there is a book about house geese and ducks "Duck, there's a Goose in the house!" by one of the ladies who makes goose diapers, however I think this may be the one who has passed away. There isn't a lot of information about house geese out there, so I'm doing what I can with what information I have. Plenty of other animals do just fine living mostly indoors, and house geese that are kept in apartments - of which I have read there are many - would not get hours outside every single day.
I don't have any grass because we live in the dessert and don't have the set up or the resources to try to keep grass. My chickens would just destroy it anyway. That's what the fodder system is for. I'll experiment with different types of seed for fodder, but she will have fresh stuff daily and as much as she wants. The system is designed for expansion when needed, so I'm not concerned about her greens intake. She get's niacin and plays outside as often as I can let her.

I am SO glad to have found a house goose thread!!! Thank you so much, what a wonderful idea! I just hatched my gosling yesterday, and I fully intend to let her be a house goose. I though it would be a boy for some reason, so I named him Nelson, only to find out after sexing that sh'e a girl. So I call her Miss Nelson now. I'll make sure to put some pictures up later. She's my first goose, and I love her already. Honestly, I think I loved her from the day I found her egg. I'm ordering some diaper harness for her tomorrow, so hopefully by wed. or so I can start getting her used to wearing it. I would love to be able to walk her on a leash with me. She can barely walk yet and will already try to follow me around. I plan to also get her a large dog carrier and teach her that it's her 'safe place' to sleep in and travel in if need be. I'll be sure to add some pictures for you guys later. So nice to have people to talk to about my baby now!

My Geese happily eat barley grass (sprouted barley) from my fodder system. Sometimes I add sunflower and/or lupin seed as well for extra protein or fat and sometimes I add alfalfa or chia seed instead. You still need your base mat - whether it is barley/wheat or oats then spread about a handfull of the sunflower or lupin or a tablespoon of the alfalfa or chia seed. What my geese don't eat the chickens finish off.

I'm so glad you found us!!! I think it will be quite fun to get to chat with other house goose people!
You are lucky to get to hatch your own goosey, I'm quite jealous. But I love Trina all the same!
Can't wait to see your pictures!!!!
Let me know if you need any help with diapers. I make my own and my own "inserts" and I'm quickly becoming and expert as Trina is on her 4th!

Very cool! Is it easy to sprout other things?
Where do you get your sprouting grains/seeds?

Trina is VERY well behaved in the car. She just sits between mom and dad! Lol
She get to go swimming today!

Yes - just add them to what you are already sprouting.

I get most of my grains and seeds from the stockfeeds - same stuff as what I feed to the animals. Alfalfa and Chia I get from the health food shop. But I'm in Australia so you might have to hunt around a bit.

just wanted to update my fellow house-goosers on miss nelson. her nose finally quit running and she seems very healthy. she's about 3 days old now, she's eating and drinking a good amount. I ordered her diaper harness's on friday morning, so I'm hoping to have them by Tuesday or Wednesday. She's very good about quieting down when I put her in her box and turn off the light when I have to leave for work. My family says she pretty much just sleeps when I'm not there, but I feel so bad leaving her. I let her cuddle with me virtually every second while I''m home though. I figure if I miss her this much when I'm gone I cant imagine how she must feel :( I'm ready to get her a friend so I can feel better about leaving her

I'm so glad she's doing well! Trina has started having nighttime fits. Suddenly she gets up and walks around our heads squaking her head off! I don't know what's wrong. Maybe it's just that she's not used to being out of her crate at night? I think I'm going to keep diapering her overnight and just put her in her crate.

Do you think she would be happier with a buddy? I've got a couple eggs in the bator so I an hatch Trina a friend.
