Housing for coturnix quail

How warm do I need to have the weather before I can start my first batch? I'm in Upstate NY, the winters here are pretty cold.

That's it and just every so often bring in some new blood and you are good to go.

The quail pen is inside a chicken pen so nothing can really get under it and scare the quail. That might be something to think about, if a dog were to get under it or something they would all try to fly up into the roof.

I don't know about that, we are in Eastern NC and it's a front page new add if we get the low 20's or in the teens.

Yeah, that's where I was thinking of putting it. I have a chicken run behind the barn and there are doors leading from each stall to the run, so I could put it going all the way from one door to the next without it being in the way of anybody, including the chickens! How deep and tall is your quail pen? I'm starting to think now... smell the smoke?

It's about chest high and I can reach all the way to the back so we can get the eggs out. I think it was about 12 or 14 inches high at the front and 18 or 20 at the back. We use a 1 gallon plastic waterer in it so I made so it would fit in easy.

Wow... I like that setup, too.

Mine's really heavy - 2x4 and 2x2 construction, but open like that. It's 3x5', and houses quite a few coturnix easily. It doesn't seem to matter how much space you give them, they always pick on each other.

Hey Steve... do you have a pickled egg recipe that is good? I tried one recently, and it wasn't worth the effort to peel the eggs. If I had a good one, I might be so inclined to try again.

No, I don't have a copy... sounds like I should though. I would love a copy of the recipe, though!
