How about a Thread for Embdens?

Ah ok so thanks for the info .At the moment the weather here is rain none stop and its fun for the geese but two of my geese look like they are cold coz they are shaking and the feathers are extremly wet so ive no idea wa to do so i thought of locking the two in the shed for a few day with straw so they will start to dry ?!?!
i'd give them a warm shed to dry and warm up.

Maybe put a large doghouse outside for them? I am new to raising a goose-- but don't like the thought of them shivering cold..... Here is one I just added for Joey, and she is going inside it to get to her dry food now (I shoved it back a ways so she has to go inside it!) What do the experts on this site think?
Good luck~ :)

Hi, you might want to get a heat lamp to help dry them in their shed. You can get a heat lamp bulb at the hardware store for about 8 dollars (?). I put my lamp up on a shelf in a corner so the birds can decide if they want to get under the heat or not. My Francie, who is between 15 and 20 yrs lost her waterproofing due to not preening enough. Do you think yours lost their waterproofing? If so, be sure they get in the water enough so they will want to preen--that is if your weather ever dries up! Be sure to let us know how they do.
PS one time I did dry Francie with a hair dryer cuz she was so cold. She seemed to love it!

I have 2 Muscovy ducks who are 9yrs old and their water proofing is not good any more and think their oil gland probably doesn't work as good as it use too, They do preen, their feathers are just not like they were when younger. That's so sweet you have a goose that age.

I agree that their preen glands just don't work like they used to when they get older. All we can do is our best to keep them as comfortable as we can. I'm hoping to get hatchlings some time. Right now I just have birds that needed homes. I'd love to get some babies and see them grow up, though. My Gabby duck came to me when she was about 8 weeks, so she has sort of grown up with me, I guess. Sounds like you have quite a variety in your little family!

So Miss Lydia -- I am thinking of adding a heat lamp for my shed for the really cold months of Jan-March here. Do they just use a regular outlet? (There is an old lightbulb and fixture there already but of course it does not work.... this is a house over 100 years old! LOL!)

I'm in Missouri and winter night temps all below freezing and often below 0*F no heat needed just a place without drafts and a thick layer of dry bedding to let them warm up. Be aware that heat lights can be a fire hazard. Wonderful friends on here lost their barn last winter and all of their animals. I would hate to see it happen to someone else.

Was wondering about that fire hazard....poor people who lost their barn and animals. Thanks!
