These are the 2 blackshoulder chicks I bought. I noticed in another post that some of you could guess the gender of the 5 week olds... these are 4 weeks.
One has a brown crest & one has a white crest.

Is it possible to sex these two yet?
If I need to wait and post pice in a few weeks, that's fine too. Just let me know. I don't think I'll have much luck with the IB eggs I got... looks like only 2 started developing & are due to hatch Friday. Haven't seen sny movement, though.
I found a local lady that claims to have opal chicks. I'd like to figure the gender on my chicks before I buy chicks from her.
I still have 3 eggs that aren't due to hatch 'till mid-month.
I guess I'll just wait & see!

Little young to be sure by a pic, one on the left looks younger also.

Left looks male, right female, but not sure with pic and the young age. The one on the left see the darker feathers on the shoulder, just coming in. Be sure after a few more weeks.

Ok... so it hasn't been a few weeks yet! LOL!
I just wanted to share more pics of my birds.
So here they are again. Almost 6 weeks old now.
They sure are getting big! They're much frendlier & MUCH quieter than chicken chicks. They'll settle right down on my lap and sleep while I'm online.

I'd be tempted to say female on left and male on right.. but am new to black shoulders- only had them for 3 years.

The reason for "not black shoulder" chicks being easier to sex is because they show a distinct pattern that is more or less reliable. BS chicks can be really variable, some light, some dark, some more brown, some more black, some more grey etc. Bottom line I'd dare guess the one on left is a female.

Last pic, left female, right male. looks like a PAIR!!!!!!!!!

Note to the red tint on wing flights.

Wait till you start seeing BS in like puple & cameo, then unless you know their background. You have to waint for neck feather to come in to tell colors.

Those are both blues BS.

Hooray!! A pair!

Well, at least something went right for me!
I know that they're IB BS, but split to what, I'm not sure.
Peacock was supposed to be blue BS split purple, but has white on his wings.
The hens in that pen were Blue BS, Purple BS, Purple, & Blue BS split (unknown)
The breeder didn't get any purple chicks from his eggs, so I'm guessing that his peacock isn't split purple.
Maybe I'll get a surprise in a few years when I breed this pair.
