How am I doing?? and whats causing this

I'm getting some from Cackle in several weeks. I've been wanting to order from Central Hatchery, but a friend placed the order and went with Cackle.

Don't go with Central...I did that a couple of years ago and got the slow growing, smaller CX type. I wasn't real happy with their body type...more Cornish than WR..and didn't lay on the meat like the bigger, faster growing birds.

Dang. Guess I may cancel the order then! Who do you recommend? how about Central....do you know anything about them? The are priced $86/per 100 birds.

NO! Beekised was talking about CENTRAL not HOOVER'S. I was replying to your question of where to go, saying I wanted to try Central--I hadn't heard much about them.

Thanks Beekissed! I may still try Central--I'm not sure that I would personally mind the smaller, slower-growing birds. However, it's good to know before hand what I'd get.

ETA: Pine Roost--as far as I know, there are a handful of broiler strains. Basically, go with the cheapest you can find from a source you trust.

I've raised meat chicks from Central in NE for the last 2 years (3 different batches) and always been very happy with them. My experience has been different than Bee's. They've been healthy and dressed out between 3-6 pounds at 6-7 weeks each time. I really like their birds and wholeheartedly recommend them - not to mention you just can't beat the price!

There were only 15 or so (out of 75) that were up to that 5-6.5# weight that I experienced other years raising chickens. They were the best foragers though by far. Seemed like they just threw an order together with what was available, probably my fault as a dog got my spring batch and I placed a last minute order from them for august 1st. About 25 didn't even look like Cornish cross type chickens. I loved the price, has anyone else had similar experience with Central Hatchery, or maybe Norfolk Hatchery about 10 miles from them? Both have the same price.

I agree! Mine didn't start getting a good size on them until around 10-12 wks, but the best foragers I've ever seen. They didn't look like CX...more Cornish than anything. Definitely not as tall, wide or long as the last CX I had raised but they sure were healthy little boogers with a good foraging instinct. Good price, healthy stock but very, very slow growing and didn't reach the normal size of the CX. I don't think their body types would have held up to reach a big size...they had short torsos, short legs, etc.

Have you priced Schlecht's Hatchery. Not bad and I've heard very good results on them.

I wish these hatcheries would post actual pics of their actual birds at maturity so a person could get a look at them. They all use that very same pic and it means nothing! I went to their site but didn't see anything more than I see at the others...that same pic and promise.

What do the other folks say about their results with that hatchery?
