How can I get rid of a cat?????????

It makes me sad to think of a cat gone missing from a family because of SSS. But it makes me sadder to think of that poor cat only doing it's cat things and getting shot because of it. It also makes me sad to think of a cat harming my chickens. Sadness all around.

ETA: right after I typed this I had a strange cat looking at me through my deck windows.

we have cats around here and they would watch our chickens as if thinking living chicken nuggets, we have a trap set for dogs and we caught a cat today, we let it go, but if it comes back, it will be gone for good, we are whiling to give none killing animals a chance (unless it is stray dogs, then they are a goners )

Whats even more sad is how many cats are put to sleep in shelters every year bc cat owners don't get them fixed.

If you know who owns the cat, take it to them or tell them about it. If you trap a feral cat and take it to a shelter you might as well just shoot it yourself. Its not going to get adopted...

On the trapping cat subject:
We stopped one day at a local shelter where someone was bringing in a stray cat in a box. The attendant was giving them royal^%^&% for TOUCHING the cat to get it out of the trap. Apparently you are supposed to leave the cat in the trap and take the whole thing in to them. It has to do with disease and possibly getting scratched by a non-rabies-vaccinated animal.
As I understood the conversation, the shelter wanted the person who removed the feral/unknown cat from the trap to undergo rabies shots because they may have been exposed to rabies by touching it.
I'd never thought of things in quite that way.

you should at least just try to pick it up. i mean, IT IS A CAT.

it would be funny (or horrible?) if you spent all this money and energy on trying to "trap" it and all you had to do was offer it some kitty food and pick it up.

the internet is dramatic. again, it's cat. let's try the reasonable/practical approach - - try to get it, then move it. if that doesn't work (which, of course, it will), then move on to something else.

*shakes head*

edited to add:

you guys are scary. someone sees a cat on their property and all of you start screaming TRAP IT/KILL IT!!!

sheesh.

how 'bout we try some other things first.

If you trap and remove feral cats, most times more come in to take their place. Studies have shown neutering and releasing decreases the feral population over time.
Trapping and removing causes a vacuum effect. More animals come, in to fill the vacuum.
I trapped and neutered and released probably at least two dozen or more feral cats when I had a huge feral cat problem in rural OK and it made a huge difference over a few years time.

the prob is that we live i a small town that dont have a shelter and let animals roam around and this was kitten, if it comes back it is dead
