Wow that's a really interesting point of view on feral cats/cats. I agree.

Thank you.
Finally a voice of reason in a sea of misplaced compassion.

We think nothing of dispatching a fox for invading our space to feed its family. A native animal that is barely holding on in some of its native territory. We are responsible for disposing of the alpha predator - the wolf - for attacking our livestock but we want to coddle cats?

We accept the world as it is given to us. Many native species extinct or threatened and say what can we do? We all have the power to do our part. Plant or retain native habitat. If you own livestock. Protect them with fencing and secure housing. Don't attract and nurture vermin by leaving waste out for the taking. And if you own a cat, or heaven forbid own many, keep them in the house.

Let me add. If we are in violation of the law for killing a songbird or threatened amphibian, aren't we just as culpable letting our cute furry killing machines run untethered to do the same?

I'm going to avoid the whole feral cats discussion to avoid putting my foot in my mouth (I have a bad habit of doing that

My advise to the OP is to go to the local garden store, and buy a scented deterrant for cats. I had a problem with a neighbor's dog breathing through the fence like Cujo, and digging to get to my chickens. I put down this stuff along the fence, and magically that dog will now not leave my neighbor's porch, much less go near the fence.

Sure it smells like a latrine that someone tossed pepper into, then promptly died and fell in themselves..... but it works!

And the smell fades after 24 hours to levels that humans can't detect easily.

X3

For strays around here we use a paintball gun on them. We can't shoot them with a real gun in town so this is a good alternative. They have never bothered my chickens, but if I wanted a cat pissing and crapping in my yard I would let my HOUSE cat go outside. Most of them belong to friends of ours across the ally. They have been told that if they are in our yard they will come home a different shade of color.

X10!!!

I love cats, and have spent years both working and volunteering for vets/humane societies. That being said, I truly believe that if you have a pet (any kind - dog, cat, horse, pig, etc.) it needs to be kept on your property.
If you cannot train your cat to stay in your yard (hahaha!!!) then keep it inside.
If you have a problem with the thought of someone dispatching your pet cat for killing their animals, then keep it inside.
They are wonderful animals, but they are also small, highly efficient predators...and chickens are def on the menu! I applaud those of you who have humane suggestions, and would hope that spraying the cat with water a time or two would run it off, but if it is a feral animal, those tasty birds will be way too much of an enticement for a few hose squirts to keep it away.

Whatever solution you choose, good luck!

Shoot it. People shoot bobcats a lot so there is no real difference. A wild cat is a wild cat regardless if it is loved by people. It
Could be a stray

If this is seriously your point of view, then you haven't been ripped end from end by a kitten, much less a full grown cat. I rarely even mess with friends' personal cats, because you never know when they'll nail you & unfortunately, it's pretty rare that they're just tame lap-dogs. I've seen what happens when well-meaning people try "just picking up" a cat, sometimes THEIR OWN. It's NOT a wise suggestion if you do not know the cat personally. I'm very aware that not all cats are like this, but IMO it's quite ignorant to think you can make friends with any cat by giving them some food & picking it up.

When I trapped a feral cat I first made a sheltered box with food and cat nip.Eventually I replaced the box with a trap that was also bagged up.Took me 6 months to tame that bugger. Now I just take them away or call AC as I can no longer take in animals. He was a good cat,but lol did he tear up my batroom when I tried to transfer him to a carrier!
