How can I make a sand box

I let our chickens out for a few hours each day to free range. When I do, they often will go to a spot under a specific tree and roll in the dirt. They do not take these dirt /sand baths anywhere but in this one specific spot. I dont want to just dig up the dirt in that spot and put it in a small swimming pool as a sand box for them. Has anyone here made a sand box, and what type of dirt/sand did you use?

for quail, i just use regular play sand and they love it, but im not sure about chickens.

Just making sure I understand, you want to build a dust bath elsewhere because you don't want them using that one spot? First thing would be to cover up the preferred spot, because otherwise they'll go right back to it. As far as the other thing:



I use peat moss. Would include wood ash too, if I had some.

Yep, and they just continued to dust bathe where they wanted.

That's why I waited for mine to chose the spot they wanted, and put the bath on top of it.
