Hi. I am planning on getting a clutch of eggs together for incubating. I have a rooster and 30 hens that he is with. He has been breeding them. I was wondering about how I can tell if the eggs that the hens are laying are fertile. I would like to know what to look for if I was to crack open an egg to check fertility and also if you can candle eggs and tell if they are fertile right after they are layed. Thank you! :)

Crack open a few eggs, take photos of the yolks and post them here. We can help you identify the Bulls eye and show you what to look for :)

If you crack the egg into a dish without breaking the shell, you will see a little white dot in the egg. If that white dot looks like a bullseye, its fertile. If it looks full, or you dont see a dot, the egg is infertile.
You can't tell if an egg is fertile without cracking it, unless its been incubating for 5-7 days. By then you will see development, and if you don't, the egg is infertile.
If you crack 4-5 eggs into a bowl, and all or most are fertile, your safe to assume you'll have mostly fertile eggs in the bator.

Usually the bullseye won't be this pronounced, but you can tell what you're looking for. 😉

30 hens with 1 rooster means that you will have a lot of infertile eggs. So put in double the eggs you want because 1/2 the hens won't be bred.
