How can I tell if the quail eggs I purchased are fresh?

I purchased some quail eggs yesterday that were auctioned as fertile. At the markets, some ...

dropped the little box they were in and cracked some

. Anyway it was probably not that bad because I noticed that some of them smelt really strong. The kids were really curious to see what was inside these speckled tiny eggs. I opened a cracked one and it was darkish inside and I thought that there was a half formed chick until I touched it and it seemed to be the yolk

. It stunk so bad that the smell wouldn't get off my hands. I have now separated all the cracked eggs and non cracked eggs and smelt them all and the ones that had an odour I have put to one side and the ones which didn't smell, I have put in regular egg cartons.

Question is: Is there any other way I can tell if these eggs are fresh? Does the float/sink thingy work or would it spoil eggs that are fertile but not yet been in the incubator?

I'm not sure what the scrambled egg mix you purchased was, but if you had paid me 20% more than you paid at auction, then I would refund 100% of your money over 1 rotten egg....Even though I know you were just trying you get over on me.

Do you want hatching eggs, or eating eggs?

The only difference is...Eating eggs have been washed, hatching eggs have not been washed, but both should be of the same freshness when cracked open....

Were you there?

I'm not sure that I understand what you are saying - It sounds a bit

Please explain? Do you have any answers to my question?

No, I was not there, but please tell me how much you paid, for what you got, then I will apply a smellometer and tell you that you got screwed, but you got what you paid for.

The answer to your only question is....MAYBE.

You can float test eating quail eggs, in a similar way that you float test chicken eggs. If they pass the float test, that doesn't mean that they are not infected with the Andromeda Strain....sorry, I just deal with fresher eggs.

No, I am not angry, and for the record....I didn't sell you any eggs.

What did you pay for the eggs, and were they sold as hatching, or eating eggs?
I just want a $ figure per dozen, and then I will shut up.

I feel WAY better now!!! I am an Aussie so it's probably not that relevant. Having said that our currency is dollar for dollar and I know I bidded up a bit high. I paid 50c each egg and got 60 eggs.
And no please don't shut up - I badly need advice!
I bough them to incubate and all that was on the label was Fertile Japanese Quail eggs.
I want to incubate them - badly, but want to know if there's a good way to tell if they are fresh before I start because 1 was rotten and no=one want's exloding eggs!
And will doing the float test ruin them for incubation?

pretty much you have seven to ten days for fertile eggs, look at the start day of the actuion, and then add a day or two for the time they sat before the seller posted, assuming it wasnt a pre order sale. add your shipping days, add one day to the end of all that (for the day you let them settle before they go into the bator) pretty much if your total days after all of that equals 10 or more your hatch rate will be down also take into consideration temp. when being mailed and your dropping them and the rotten ones you prob wont have a very good chance of a successfull hatch, because when there is one rotten egg chances are they are all in rough shape so here is an easy calculator for you for next time

1-2 days for prior posting+days in action+transportation days+1 day to settle after arrival=10 or under your good'=10 or over you may want to find a diffrent seller

i would recomend seller on byc because your able to pm them and get exact hatch days where as on ebay as long as they get the money it really doesnt matter.

sorry for your bad luck, luckily it was only a thirty dollar lesson could have been a lot worse, imagine if they were california quail eggs that go for around 2 bucks a piece,
also i would recomend ordering smaller batches a lot of people cant get 60 eggs fresh but want the money so they lie, next time try getting 30 eggs from two diffrent suppliers, better chance of fresh eggs and plus you will get a more diverse bloodline combo.
