How did your flock annoy you today?

This reminds me of how I let a friend hold some chicks. Now, I hadn't had a chick poop twice in 30 minutes, but both of them managed to poop on her a total of four times! I hadn't even gotten pooped on that much, she beat me! I also waited for them to poo before giving them to her :gig
My mom came over yesterday for the first time since my chicks moved into their coop. She had also never met my 4 newest yet, even though I've had them for a while now. Well, we went into the coop, and immediately one of the "new" ones, a female porcelain d'Uccle, flew up and landed on her back, right behind her head. My poor mom was terrified the bird would poop in her hair, lol. Thankfully, she does at least love chickens. My daughter removed the chicken from my mom's head, and the rest of the visit was much less eventful. Way to make a big first impression, Bonnie!

Nobody’s laid their first egg. Now I’m paranoid it won’t happen this year because days are getting shorter in the Midwest.
My first to lay did it at the end of November last year. The rest followed throughout winter, with the last one finally laying toward the end of February. When it comes to pullets coming into lay, I don't know if daylight matters as much as when they're laying hens.

That happens with my parrots. Always when someone is wearing nice clothing and just came over to say 'Hi'.... and gets the jackson pollock treatment.

Thank you for the hope! I’m just an anxious lady in general but I get more anxious about each new stage.

I opened my coop today, let everyone out, waited a while and went to check eggs. Only 5 in the nest boxes so I go check the coop because some pullets just drop it wherever. Found Speckles dead. She managed to snap her neck and hang herself on a roosting branch. Considering the scene I have concluded it happened last night at roosting time. And it was quick and quiet because I was outside at that time. Seriously and I thought quail were stupid.

I’m so sorry…

How? How did she do that?

My setup is pretty redneck so the roosting bars are thick tree branches. Now mind you this branch has been in the coop for at least a year. It had a spot that had 2 branch offs that I angled down, back and out. Somehow she stabbed her throat and beak with one and wrapped her neck around the branch and was tapped under the other branch off. She was so completely tangled in it I had to remove the branch before I could get her off. I think she jumped and missed got stuck and thrashed before snapping her neck and stabbing herself.

It was full dark and I had to go into the coop and put a chick back under Momma because it fell out of the nesting area and was freaking out but wouldn't use the ramp back to Mom. When I went in Speckles was fine, but yesterday after everything I examined her and she had been pooped on leading me to believe it happened after I went into the coop but before morning when everyone is released.

I hate when they catch their necks on things while they’re flying up.

I’m so sorry. That’s terrible. RIP Sparkles.
