How did your flock annoy you today?

Tell me more about this chicken sling….
If you look up sling on this site there are many DIY instructions for making one, or you could go buy one from amazon. Typically, people use it for chicken walking rehab. Essentially, it is a tote bag with space for the head and tail to come out where there are two feet holes and you can access their feet. Great for one person bumblefoot checkups or filing their nails if they have a chance to scratch you or another chicken. Very difficult to get the chicken inside, unlike a towel burrito. I hugged the chicken which blocked her view from the front, got the feet around the holes, and basically pulled both down at the same time. I also ended up using a cargo strap to keep it up. I prefer the towel burrito for faster checkups, but the pictures of a chicken in a sling is really cute, it's easier to file the nails, and you can move to get things if you need.

Being picky eaters!! They are worse than cats. They devour it one week, so I buy that item in bulk...they refuse to touch it again.

I've tried leaving the food that they decided was unacceptable, thinking they would eat it when they were hungry enough. They didn't touch it for over 24 hours and screamed nonstop. This food was from the SAME bag they went bonkers for 3 days prior.

One of our hens doesn't mind being picked up or carried but she hates being put down. I'm always careful to make sure a hen has her legs under her and is steady on her feet before I release her. I'm very gentle and don't dig in my fingers or press on their crops or anything like that. For some reason this one hen just doesn't trust me and when she thinks I'm going to put her down she starts flapping and flailing around with her legs and invariably scratches me if I'm wearing short sleeves.

The cashier at the store yesterday saw the scratches on my arms and asked me if I had a cat. The puzzled expression on her face when I said, "No, chickens," was hilarious. 😄

So I have some news. I found 20 eggs hidden away yesterday. Massive nest on my neighbors property. Yep. On top of that Daytona was playing in the road again and someone actually got out of their car and chased her out of the road. Unfortunately I was laughing to hard due to the honking to be of any help. The best part about today has to be watching some babies start screaming for their Moms and running around looking for them only for their Moms to be 6 feet away. I then have to chase them down, grab the little fuzzballs and set them as close as I can to aggressive mothers while making sure the babies actually see their Mom. Ugh hopefully they get smarter.

A group of young chicks (5 weeks old) decided to play hide and seek today. I even tossed around treats to entice them out of hiding. Nothing!

I checked under, behind and on top of everything I could think of . . . after 45 minutes of me crawling around in the dirt and grass the little devils just reappeared. I still don't know where they hid.

I assumed my friend with multiple cats would know to drop the chicken if they get feisty, I assumed wrong! Some chickens need to have your hands over the wings and some others will airplane and enjoy the ride. I also have one that panics as soon as I start lowering her even an inch. I tend to hold her to my body because she doesn't struggle like that, or if she has muddy feet I use my chin as she faces me to keep her from flapping.
