WIND makes it so much worse that is what is bad aboud being KS lots and lots of wind that goes right through you brrrrrrrrrr I also got spoiled living in Knoxville for 14 years
Layers, layers, more layers. It was 17 degrees when I dropped the kids off at school today. A neighbor was shoveling his driveway in shorts. Today does feel warmer for some reason.
I grew up in TX...and it took a long time to get used to the cold when we moved to NH. Here in NY is just the same, but we get dumped on from lake effect snow. I can't wait for spring!
The funny thing is that all the stores are clearancing(sp) out their winter items. Went to the mall the other day to find a heavy coat for my nephew and they had shorts and t-shirts out! I was thinking don't you people know it is January! Of course we were still running out A/C in Nov on some days. Before I know it they will have the A/Cs merchandised in Feb, normally the coldest month of the year. Just wrapped all the rabbits with tarps and gave the babies a fresh nest since their mother eats all the hay out of their box.
I would much rather have snow and cold than humid heat and all the problems with warm weather year round (feral chmips, poisonous snakes and scorpions).
It's 22 degrees here, up from 18 when I woke up.
Going out in the morning, when it's still dark and so still and cold, the stars are shining, the smell of woodsmoke in the cold air, hearing the hens clucking quietly to me as I open their coop and toss scratch feed for them, it's a wonderful thing.
It's climbed up to 9 degrees here (Colorado plains, rural area) but was negatives during the night. Dress warmly. Make sure your chickens' water doesn't freeze (I take out a jug of hot water every time I go out), and trust that your chickens can take care of themselves. Our black australorp rooster has frostbite on his comb so that will be falling off (poor guy). I also make them special "pancakes" that includes ground alfalfa pellets in them (the alfalfa helps them retain their body heat).
Looking forward to this Friday & Saturday to do a little bit of hiking. There's nothing like being on top of a mountain, the only tracks are yours and your better halves. Maybe a snowshoe here and there. Listening to the stillness, the peace and quietness. Seeing for miles upon miles, seeing birds flying below you. Taking a swig of water and finding out it froze.... Breaking out the stove and having some nice hot soup.... Yep I am looking forward to this weekend.

Love the smell of woodsmoke in the morning, too! Neighbors have wood heat and it smells so lovely when I'm out doing the morning chores! Kinda wish we had wood heat, too.
5 degrees here and heading for a high of -5 this weekend. Keeping the chickens warm in their insurlated coop with a heat lamp and heated waterer. They're doing just fine, producing ~1 egg per girl per day.
